WTN: Cono Sur Vision Pinot Noir 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:27 am

Colchagua Valley.

Light cherry red in the glass.

Smoky on the nose with an odd chemical-like smell, which, luckily, blew off with time.

Spicy, fairly rich raspberry and strawberry fruit, earthy, quite tangy, good clean acidity, medium weight, a persistent "chemical-like" taste.

A tart, drying finish.

Had the potential to be an okay wine, but I found that odd flavour quite distracting.

Purchased at $15.95 (Canadian).

Chilean, right? I can't remember if it was a chemical aroma or not, but there was something odd about the only other two Chilean pinots I remember having too. It's been a few years, but those two weren't far apart and I remember wondering what the heck is going on down there that two different producers get that same odd flavor.

Bruce, I have had this wine along with their sauvignon blanc. Actually I found it to be drinkable in a cheaper California kind of way. It tasted of pinot, candied apple some light cherry, little (any?) tannin, still a gulpable light red for the deck this summer. My price was half of yours though at $7.50 per. AND, I liked their SB better.

Cono Sur is maybe my favorite Chilean winery because of their sauvignon blanc. I have treid a few others, like the Syrah, the Pinot, and the Cabernet, and they were all OK (not much of a rave) after some aeration.
