1999 Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner-Schloss Saarstein Auslese #12
9% abv. $34.50 USD
Almost a small disaster! Moist cork, my waiters key gutted out the top half of the cork into pieces, out came the trusty Ah-so and so did the cork in one piece.
I was a little worried....
Brilliant rich gold and darker at the edges. Coats the glass like oil and hangs for a bit.
Pineapples, slight diesel, peaches, white spring flowers, (if I knew how to describe earth tones I would).
Mouth filling smooth texture that gets tangy, finishing rich with some dryness. Very nice, I really liked this wine (not overpowering sweet).
I have enjoyed Schloss Saarsteins wines for a while (always hunting for the ultimate Saar).

Thanks
Michael

I don't think you will ever find the ultimate Saar wine at that address, but I am sure you will always find something very satisfying. I've met Andrea Ebert on a couple of occasions & she's great. (she can also drink me under the table)

David,

Any recommendations for a great Saar that won't crash the pocketbook?

I don't know about 'great' across the board, but von Hovel is affordable and has some pretty nice wines in 05 and 07.

People like Zilliken as well.

von Kesselstatt can have good wines. I don't know about 'great'.

von Hovel can be great, but pretty much only with their Hutte bottlings. Zilliken is the best bet, with their Saarburger Rausch.
