WTN: the perfect Rosé

by Martin Barz » Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:57 am

2007 Dom. de la Mordorée, “La Dame Rousse”, Tavel, Rhone, France

Besides Riesling, nothing is better than a chilled Rosé for these hot summer days. And you will find rarely a wine like Rosé which fits such perfectly for all kind of cuisine like vegetarian, mediterranean, pizza, spicy food, fish, meat and
why not for dessert.
BUT if you have not the luck to live in the south of France, it is not quite easy to find a good Rosé. Most are too sweet or lack of complexity and finesse. With 2007 Dom. de la Mordorée, “La Dame Rousse” we have the best Rosé I´ve ever tasted. Based on 60% Grenache, 10% Cinsault, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 5% Bourboulenc and 5% Clairette. The vineyard age is 40 years with terroir of clay/chalk and sandy with pebble stones.
Lovely dense perfume of strawberry. Full-bodied with flavors of raspberry, grapefruit, roses and a touch of anise in the finish. Brilliant precise&long-lasting flavors with depth and complexity. And overall such an elegant&sublime style for a Rosé. Good-aging potential for the coming years. Hats off to Christophe&Fabrice Delorme!

91-92pts.

IT's also pretty much the cult rosé. The stuff flies off the shelves over here. It's actually hard to get these days.

About $23 in the USA, so pretty much the same price if you can find it.

It'll be available in the Seattle market around August 15th. Price will be $27, but all wine is expensive in Seattle. I know I'm going to snap up a few, and some of their Lirac rouge too.

i usually find tavel rose too heavy - often alcoholic even. i've found that the provence roses are often more to my liking - as are those of loire.

No doubt David, this Rosé is BIG with 14,5%. Normally, I also have some difficulties with high alcohol wines, but surprisingly not with this Rosé.
