WTN - Penfold's St Henri Shiraz 1999

by John S » Fri Jul 04, 2008 3:44 pm

  • 1999 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri - Australia, South Australia (6/27/2008)
From a half bottle. Deep brick in colour, with an expressive nose of cherry, plum, cloves and a hint of brown sugar. Very expressive on the full palate as well. with a structured blast of more plums, cherries, cloves, licorice, blueberries and leather on a very long finish. It absolutely coats the mouth, and lasts about 45 seconds. Very impressive wine. Lots of fruit yes, but not a fruit bomb: there's a lovely balance and stucture with the considerable power. (A-/A)

John, it always blows my mind when I see restaurants offering the `04/`05 on their winelist. Surely way too young, but yes guess food might help. Not sure?

From my fairly basic history, the St Henri needs a fair bit of time to realy shine. I love the lack of oak on this shiraz.

Me, too. It's one of my favorite Aussies.

Me, too. It's one of my favorite Aussies. Recently added a few 03's to the cellar. Was sure I owned some older ones, possibly the 99, but I checked my inventory just now and it says no. Strange.
