Price and WTNs: A Question?

by Redwinger » Mon Jul 07, 2008 1:13 pm

Do you find it beneficial when posters list the price they paid for a particular wine? I try to do this on recent purchases, but was wondering if anyone finds it useful/meaningful?
Of course there are times when price is not known (gift, off-lines, just forgot what you paid, older vinatges where price loses some relevance, etc).
Whadda you think?

Always meaningful/interesting, even if nothing more than as casual trivia.

For me, it helps place a wine in perspective. I.E. many wines may be fun to casually drink at $15 but a crime against humanity at $150.

Also, it is interesting to read about prices from different markets in the US and across the world.

Agreed. It really helps me to decide if I want to search out a particular wine that's gotten high praise.

Agree. We always include price and alcohol level; as well as other tech data as available. These were on Howie's recent "form." Many moons ago on the old forum I suggested that these be made mandatory, but the ever democratic Robin nixed it.

What everyone else said! It's useful information in any case, even if you're just doing a victory dance about a great Bordeaux you bought 20 years ago for $6. :D

Seriously, I can't see any reason not to do it. Some folks might fear it looks boastful or ostentatious, perhaps, but there's no reason to feel that way in this friendly group. It's useful consumer information.

I list the price since I buy in Canadian dollars so it is instructive to learn from someone else just how much cheaper that same wine is just south of the border.

With this group of folks it would rarely venture towards boastful or ostentatious, but that's not true of all wine fora. There is very little mention of points here and a decent balance between the everyday, but interesting and the more illustrious labels.

I'm not so fussed about adding the price into a WTN, but would have no problems with others doing so. For me I rarely drink wine within a year of release and hence prices will be pretty much out of date, or relate to what I paid for a mature (or over mature knowing my tastes!) bottle. I'm sure I do mention prices in extreme cases and will happily respond with the price if asked (if I can recall that is!).

I also try to include purchase price on recently acquired wines, and I find it useful when others show them in WTN, too. It helps me gauge my level of interest in a wine, knowing whether it sells for $100 or $20 without having to consult wine-searcher.

Agreed. I find it very helpful information toward deciding if this is an "everyday drinker" or a "special occasion bottle," if it wasn't evident from the context of the note.
