As the temperature difference between Vacaville (where I live) and coastal Napa County is 9-15 degrees cooler (even during the heat wave), I tend to do a lot of bicycling in Napa County. I feel somewhat guilty about burning gasoline for the 25 miles or so it takes, but...
So, anyway...I stopped at the newish Michael Mondavi custom crush/collective tasting room in Carneros yesterday near the end of a bicycle ride (I find Carneros a beautiful place to ride-no traffic and very rural...Henry Road is a 4-mile long deadend that is just gorgeous. Maybe two cars the whole trip!)
So...I enjoyed the Old Vines Mataro from Trinitas Cellars. Matt Cline was still the winemaker then (2004) and it was a very chunky, earthy savory, licorice-y wine that was intriguing ($24). But, anyway, to the topic of my post, they had Renteria Pinot Noir at the pouring. High alcohol (upper end of the 14%s) but very very earthy and mushroomy and savory and maybe??? even woody. Some cherry fruit, also, but not a big fruit bomb style of Pinot. The Knittel Vineyard Pinot was the specific wine tasted. https://www.renteriawines.com/renteria/ ... /index.jsp
Anybody had any experience with Renteria? Interesting history! http://www.renteriawines.com/renteria/page/history.jsp
I like the Culler wines that I have tasted (Syrah), so maybe that is why I found the earthy, savory style of Pinot here, too???
