Citadelle de Blaye listed as World Heritage Site by Unesco

by AlexR » Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:08 am

Hi Guys,

There are now three such sites in the Gironde department:

- Saint-Emilion (since 1999)
- Bordeaux (since last summer)
- Citadelle de Blaye (as part of the network of fortifications built by Vauban)

This is a huge boon to tourism, but also calls for a major effort to retain the distinction.

Once you have got Yquem, Mouton, and Cheval Blanc out of your system, you would do well to visit Blaye. You won't regret it.

There has been a big increase in wine tourism of late, and the Bourg/Blaye region is not only beautiful, but the wines can be very good indeed - and they are almost always inexpensive.

Best regards,
Alex R.

There is also a nice wine shop in Blaye which claims to sell most of wines of the appellation at ex-cellar prices. They are often excellent QPR.
