Daniel Rogov and his forums join WLDG

by Robin Garr » Wed Jul 09, 2008 1:19 pm

We are pleased to announce that internationally known wine and food writer Daniel Rogov and his forums will be joining WLDG. "Rogov", as he likes to be known, is currently the wine and restaurant critic for the Israel edition of the International Herald Tribune as well as Israeli daily newspaper HaAretz. He is also a consultant to Hugh Johnson's Encyclopedia of Wine and a regular contributor on wine and food to Tom Stevenson's Wine Report and a number of European publications. Though admirably experienced with great wines from all over the world, he has established himself as the authority on Israeli wines and his annually-published book, Rogov's Guide to Israeli Wines, is in its fifth year.

For years Rogov has also been a stalwart presence in the online wine discussion community, holding court on his own forums at one of the 'net's first independent sites, Strat's Place, founded by Art and Betsy Stratmeyer, which will be closing this year due to Art's sad and recent death.

We are proud to give Rogov and his many online friends around the globe a new place to call 'home'. In addition to two forums that will be accessible from the Board Index just like WLDG and FLDG, and that will enable the Rogov community to relocate intact, Rogov's wine and food articles, known collectively as Rogov's Ramblings, will now enjoy publication on WineLoversPage.com.

As Rogov's Place goes live in the next few weeks, please join us in giving our new friends a very warm WLDG welcome.

Art's death was indeed sad news, Robin. Art Stratemeyer was a true gentleman and their site has been a tremendous resource. Strat's place will be missed, but I'm glad to hear that Daniel Rogov will have a new home here.

I hadn't heard about Art's passing. That's very sad, he was one of the first on line friends I made those many years ago. RIP, Art.

And welcome aboard, Rogov. I look forward to your contributions.

Welcome Mr. Rogov. I have been a regular reader of "Rogov's Ramblings" over the years. I look forward to reading your "Ramblings" at your new home.

I've posted a few notes on Strat's Place and have read Rogov's tasting notes on various wines including those of Alex Gambal's Burgundies.

A most welcome addition to the WLDG and FLDG forums. Rogov has been well known among wine and food geeks for a long long time, and one I have enjoyed reading over the years. As good as the WLDG is, and has been for a long time, it just got better.

Hello to all the WLDG folk!

I see a number of us Strat's Place folk have already signed on. I'm actually looking foward to this new chapter for 'our little forum.' Change can revitalize - not that we had any lack of vitality - new setting, new friends, fresh blood, expanded horizons - all good things. I hope the WLDG folks will all come to know and love Rogov as we have.

Best Wishes,
Ryan

P.S.: I'll miss my post count a bit, but it's also something of a relief: I'll no longer have to look at the number and think, "My God, I spend way too much time here!" :)

And hello right back, Ryan! Welcome to you, Rogov, Birgir and everyone else. We're happy to have Strat's spirit here. And don't worry about your post count, as you obviously know it adds up fast. Btw, forum policy is that as soon as you get to 1,000, you get to pick your own title.

Thank you Anders! That is the WIYN 3.5 meter at Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is 50 miles SW of Tucson, Arizona. My department is part of the consortium that owns/operates it (we're Indiana - the "I" in WIYN). All the info you could possibly want: http://www.noao.edu/wiyn/

Nice Ryan! I know Kitt Peak since I have actually been there. We made a trip with the class around different labs and universities in California and Arizona at the end of my studies to become an engineer, and one of the visits was in fact to Kitt Peak! That was in 1977, however, so I guess it has changed quite a bit since then. I still have a weak spot for that observatory.
Cheers,
