WTN: Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler (name continues ad inf) + a Macon

  • 2004 Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Bernkastleler alte Badstube am Doctorberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (7/10/2008)
A.P. 2 576185 019 05; 7,5% abv; 15,95€. This is a pleasant, slightly rustic style of Mosel Spätlese. The nose has some earth and steel coupled with honeyed fruit. The acidity is quite high and makes the sweetness taste very clean and pure. The taste has a few rough and rustic edges, but is still a nice example of Mosel Riesling. Refreshing and moderately long aftertaste.
  • 2005 Domaine de Rochebin Mâcon-Azé - France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Azé (7/10/2008)
100% Gamay; 12% abv; 9,91€. Bright, tart cherry and earth aromas; bright fruit, high acid - I find this very enjoyable with some fatty food that moderates the structure, but I can imagine this isn't a wine for popular taste.

This vineyard name is the result of a lengthy battle (with the relation branch of the Thanisch family) over Bernkasteler Doktor naming rights. The fight was successful to a degree (in that the word Doctorberg appears in the vineyard name.) The alte Badstube am Doctorberg is to the right of the Doctor (as you see it from the river), but also in a bit of a pocket. Dr. Pauly believes it to be the better vineyard. Both Thanisch branches would disagree. I think of Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler as a decent estate who has kind of fallen from glory. I've tasted older vintages though that were spectacular though.

Cheers,
Bill

But there's no self interest in that opinion.

The sad part is that while (one of) the Thanisch estates sometimes produces marvelous wines from the Doctor, all three esates are really not coming close to their potential.

Which in its turn means that tourists and locals can irrigate the lower parts of the vineyard secretly; after the game against Turkey, I counted no less than six of them, all Germans

Bill, thanks for the info on the name! I hadn't known about the feud with the Thanischs.

David, though middling estates, at least here they haven't been priced as high as the very few occasions we have had the good estates. I really enjoyed a Thanisch Kab '99 that we had here a long time, and now this Pauly-Bergweiler is a decent wine also - and both were a third less than the big names, so I don't complain but I will gladly drink them. If I had a better selection available, I probably wouldn't buy them again, but with these being practically the only Mosels in our monopoly, I will.

Otto,

Don't get me wrong - the wines are good, but the terroirs are so much better.
