Pinot Noir

by KenZee » Thu Jul 10, 2008 7:56 pm

This is my first message as a new member of this discussion group, so if I am doing something wrong like posting this on the wrong message board, please corrects me.
Thank You
This posting is all about my love for the Pinot Noir grape and the wine that is made from it. As you all know Pinot Noir is all about Burgundy France where most authorities believe is the grapes origin.
There is a lot to be said about this wine, but the one word that (to me) describes it most is” sexy”.
To make a long story short, I have researched this grape in many ways from grapevine to winemaking and throughout my studies I have found one resource that I think is the most comprehensive, and this article I would like to share with you.
I’m sure in the many years you have been talking about wine, Pinot Noir has been studied many times, but as far as the most in-depth study I think this tells it all.
Thank You

Techniques for Pinot Noir

Introduction
Pinot Noir is often seen as a cantankerous grape variety. For many winemakers, it presents one of the ultimate winemaking challenges and is very much considered a "winemaker's wine".

A great variety of opinions exist as to how to make great dry red Pinot, most likely as a result of the wide variety in quality from Pinot grown in different years from different regions. This article reviews the varying techniques used to make dry red Pinot Noir wines with respect to grape quality and wine style. It provides a foundation upon which decisions can be made. Ultimately, the individual winemaker must discern which practise best suits their fruit and their set-up. This kind of judgement can only come with experience....

Welcome Ken,

Thanks for the tome on my favorite red variety, pinot noir. I agree with your assessment of this being a 'sexy' wine. I have read descriptions of pinot always seem to get around to seduction or sex as part of its essential character.

Welcome, Ken! You'll certainly find plenty of people here who share your love of pinot noir.

On posting articles, we would appreciate it if you could post a link to the article along with a short excerpt or two rather than the entire article. We start straying into copyright issues when the whole article gets published here, so our policy is to ask people to go with the excerpt and link. It's an easy thing to fix as well - just click the "Edit" button at the top of your post and you should be able to go in and shorten it up. If you have any problems with that, just send me a PM and I'll give you a hand with it.

Again, welcome to the WLDG. So what's the best pinot you've had in the last couple of weeks?

From a forum administration standpoint - Ben I was looking at your site & there appears to be no way to directly link to the article. Is it possible?

Thanks for any help.

Ken, welcome to WLDG. Good post about good material from someone who is already a forum member, Ben Rotter. Small world, isn't it?

I would also agree with you about pinot noir's sexiness. You're in Australia, right? Are there any Australian pinots that you think show potential for this grape in your neck of the woods? I've tasted a few and have to admit not being that impressed--the wines are tasty but simplistic. The best I've had have not been mainland, but Tasmanian. Dalrymple, to name one.

Ben, as you see, we were already on the case when you wrote. Thanks for being understanding ... Ken is new to the forum and of course did not mean to offend, but we've cleared things up (I hope the brief excerpt preceding the link, to give people a "taste," is to your satisfaction), and it gave us an opportunity to remind everyone about copyright on the Web.

I am sorry if I offended you in any way Ben, I do not know very much about posting articles on discussion group boards. I thought this article was opened to the public since it is readily available online for anyone to read. In my many years as a wine lover, I have read many articles from books, magazines, and publications about this finicky Pinot Noir grape, and of all those I read, I think yours is the most comprehensive. Since I made it a point to not only have your name as the writer but also the organization you represent, I didn’t think it would be a problem. I guess I was mistaken, so I will make it a point in the future to only post some excerpts from it and a hyperlink to your web site.
Again please accept my apology.

Hello, Ben!
Look for "The Heartbreak Grape", about Josh Jensen who makes some of California's best Pinot Noir at Calera. By now you've probably figured out that Burgundy is the one wine to stay away from. Once you're hooked, it's an expensive mistress.

My favourite wine book. A beautifully written love affair.
