WTN: 2005 Spreitzer Riesling Kabinett

by Jim Grow » Sun Jul 13, 2008 12:23 pm

This, my last bottle from Oestricher Lenchen, was fabulous and much better integrated than one I had several years ago. There was a nice balance between the full apple flavors and good acidity but it was the texture that really impressed me. This bottle had a creaminess that reminded me of past bottles from Peter Jacob Kuhn. It went really well with grilled chicken breast and pesto flavored pasta salad. Res. sugar is obvious and proably 1.5-2%. I can't remember if Kuhn's bottles came from the same vineyard but if so, maybe this is a characteristic of it. Probably more likely a reflection of vinification style.

I am an annual buyer of Spreitzer's Oestricher Lenchen Kabinett. But I don't drink mine as soon as you do. Right now I am still working on the 2002, and have only opened one bottle of 2004 and no 2005s to date. The 2007 is another winner that i have ordered on DI and look forward to cellaring for a while.

The Spreitzer brothers also release a halbtrocken version of the same wine that is remarkably flexible as a meal accompaniment.

I don't have a lot of experience with Spreitzer but my memory of their style is not quite as rich and "overdone" (to use a subjective critique) as Kuhn. I found Spreitzer much more 'typical' Mosel.

That's just me, the Kuhn wines may be attractive and well-priced, but the ones I tasted were always too creamy for what they were.

Anyone else have experiences?

Typical Mosel from the Rheingau Rahsaan? Although I can see what you mean in their kabinett & spatlese offerings from teh Lenchen. Once you hit the spatlese '303' though it's Rheingau all the way. And their Winkeler Jesuitengarten is quickly becoming another Rheigau benchmark for me.

Ok, yes, typed too quickly without thinking :D

Either way, my memory filed Spreitzer as more restrained and drinkable than the Kuhn wines, which were always overdone for me.
