WhatEver Happened To...PhillipSeldon & DeeSindt??

by TomHill » Wed Jul 16, 2008 4:14 pm

Phillip Seldon was the founder for a magazine back in the mid-'70's called Vintage. When I was writing for them in the late '70's, HankRubin, originally wine columnist for BobApetit when it was a freebe published in KC by Pillsbury, was my editor. A finer man as you'd ever want to know. Phillip Seldon was a pretty controversial guy who had a propensity to sue at the drop of a hat. He authored "The Idiot's Complete Guide to Wine" in 1997, a book even some of us idiots found pretty useless. According to Google, he's publishing another Vintage magazine these days, one that I've never seen.
Dee Sindt was the editor/publisher of a magazine called WineWorld in about that same time frame, along w/ a guy named DickSherwin. Sherwin was also the original founder/owner of the LyttonSpringsWnry, that of the ugly black label w/ a picture of a bunch of Zinfandel grapes. According to a winemaker friend, Sherwin made his money publishing porno magazines in the LA area and speculation was that Sindt was one of his porno queens. I had a run-in w/ Sindt over her blanket statement that all of the (rain-besotted) Calif Cabs of the 1972 vintage would not last more than 10 yrs. I cited the '72 RidgeMonteBello as one that would easily go out 20 yrs or more, to which she roundly castigated me in print. It left deep emotional scars that I still have dificulty dealing with to this day. She was, of course, dead wrong. She's linked to http://www.WineMatch.com on Robin's WLDG board, but the site has little to offer in the way of information.

Since the mid-'80's, these folks have pretty much vanished from the wine scene, as best I can tell. Anbody out here in CyberSpace have any contact these days with either of these two famous folks and can offer up an update??

As an aside, I keep in touch w/ HankRubin & see him about every other year out in SanFrancisco. He really doesn't get the credit that's due him in both the food world and the wine world. He's really the one who should be credited w/ the Calif cuisine food movement that emphasizes locally-grown fresh ingredients that AliceWaters later championed. He founded the Berkley restaurant called The Pot Luck, to which Alice Waters was a frequent atendee at his weekly dinners. The wine list was an incredible one, for its time. Hank has authored a number of books over the yrs. His wife is Lillian Rubin, a highly regarded psychologist who's authored a number of very highly recommended books. Last time I saw Hank was over a yr ago and he seemed rather frail, but a mind has sharp as a tack and that same mischevious glint in his eye. Hank's about as fine a gentleman as I've ever met in my life and his name should be better known amongst all you folks.

Tom, I had some phone calls from Philip Seldon within the past few years - maybe late '90s - I don't recall the details, but as I recall he wanted me to do a free-lance piece for a project he was working on, nothing much seemed to come of it.

I never met Hank Rubin, but I loved his simple Q&A column in Bon Appetit back in the '70s and was much more impressed by him than by his colleague Mr. Blue. Truth be told, when I started writing about wine for the Louisville newspapers in the early '80s, I pretty much kept Rubin's friendly, plain-spoken and non-snob approach very much in mind as I shaped my own wine-writing persona, so I guess I owe him one, even if I didn't get to know him.

Kinda makes you another one of those old farts, doesn't it, Robin. :D
Hank's no-nonsense Q&A columns were always a pleasure to read. When I was starting to get interested in wine about 1969 and going up to Berbiglia's in KansasCity, then the wine mecca for KC, BA was a freebe they handed out and Hank's column was the first thing I'd read. When Pillsbury sold BonApetit and the mag went commercial, the decided to drop his Q&A column as a bit too hicksville and not befitting their new/professional image. They took on TonyBlue as their wine editor, but Hank continued to sit on their BA tasting panel, though Tony authored the articles. Blue is now editor/publisher of some kind of free wine/spirits publication (forget the name) that is one of the lamest publications I've ever seen. Seems to be mostly in the pocket/chief cheerleader for Southern Wine&Spirits.

Beg pardon, sir. I am a young old fart. ;)

Seriously, though, it sounds like we're very much on the same page where Mr. Rubin is concerned. I wish I had had a chance to meet him.

I was surprised to discover in the past few years that he's still around. I guess it's just one of those things that younger guys do, but I always assumed he was ancient back in the '70s.

At the risk of being snarky, did you happen to see him as a judge in one of the first pilots of Iron Chef America? I guess it was stage fright, but he looked so stiff and frozen that it was almost as if they had brought out a tailor's dummy with a suit on and kind of crammed it into an armchair ...

Didn't see him in that cameo role. Don't have a TV that works. And, come next February, it will be a hopeless case fer sure.
The one time I did meet him, though, he was very much like that. Guess it's just his persona.

I remember Hank Rubin's writings fondly, making me a certifiable old fart..I heard the same rumbles re porn publishing about Phil Seldon..I remember going to a couple of tastings Vintage magazine ran back in the 70's when I was single and living in NYC..I got stiffed on a tasting fee for a tasting that got cancelled and also on a subscription renewal when he folded Vintage..Their offices were a shambles, cluttered and messy..Was up their twice, trying to get my money back, to no avail
