WTN: a Clean Slate? Not so much

by JC (NC) » Fri Jul 18, 2008 1:05 pm

2006 Clean Slate Riesling
Gave in to the temptation to try a cheaper German Riesling (retails for anywhere from $9-$15). This is from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, imported by Click Imports. 10.5% alcohol

Pale straw color with transparency. Sweet/acidic impressions at the same time. Does have some M-S-R characterisitcs if you search for them but doesn't really do it for me. A little dull and generic. I'd rather pay a little more in future and enjoy a better or more distinctive wine. It might be okay as a picnic wine or inexpensive wine to share with non-geek friends. I had it with spinach ravioli in Alfredo mushroom sauce.

(Edited for several typos--the alcohol was listed as 10.5%, not 105%!)

Bulk producers be damned!

by Bill Hooper » Sat Jul 19, 2008 1:09 pm

Wines like this are the Liebfraumilch of Generation Y. The Blue Nun generation is starting to die off and German bulk-wine producers (who SHOULD be growing apples or potatoes in these 'vineyards') need a new market for their 'produce.' Hip labels (I guess that Nun was a very hip lady back in the day), frosted, windowed, or cat-shaped bottles done in a 'drier' style seems to be the formula of the day. It is wine like these that continues to make great German wine so undervalued. 'Fine' you might say. But the danger is that producers are abandoning good sites or just pulling up stakes altogether because they aren't making enough money to continue. The World is poorer for it.

Cheers,
Bill

So this isn't the Loosen bottling?
Glad it wasn't 105% :)
