Synesthesia...

by SteveG » Sat Jul 19, 2008 6:39 pm

I know this is a bit esoteric, but realize it or not oenophiles are probably aesthetic sorts...(& I am a fan of V. Nabakov)

This wine immediately struck me as pastel gold and green (odd, since it is pink). I would not be surprised if others have similar experiences!

2007 Domaine du Bagnol Cassis Rosé

7/19/2008 rated 88 points: Brilliant light salmon color, nose of fresh-picked apples and stone fruits, dry flowers. Taste of peaches and tart apple, perfectly dry and a bit mineral and very slight saltiness, with more ripeness to a modest finish. Overall this a very light-styled rose, barely tannic and smooth textured. Not a greatly sophisticated wine, but well-balanced and suited to more austere tastes, quiet and elegant.

It may be esoteric, but it sounds delicious. Where did you get it?

Interesting post (I too am a Nabokov fan)/ Are you seriously a taste-aroma>color synesthete? If so, does it occur often?

Thanks, David, wine came from Crush in NYC, I really did enjoy it, considerably beyond 'pleasant' and I suspect a very versatile wine. If I could locate it 600 miles closer and perhaps a few dollars less dear I would buy several.

and thank you also, Dale, I don't think I am unusually blessed at this (I recall (almost certainly inexactly) Nabokov saying something like for him the experience of composing sentences was akin to painting(!)), although I have at least one daughter who seems unconsciously quite adept. I do however experience anomalies of this sort, generally pretty mild and under even my own radar, but this one was pretty strong and it struck me that if one considers the evolving lexicon of tasting notes (with which I am not yet too good personally), it is hard to miss the abundance of interdisciplinary language:

crisp
smooth
solid
unyielding
light
structured
harmonious
...

Indeed, tasting notes would appear almost useless without the (apparently common(?)) innate ability to accurately and effectively choose descriptors which at first consideration seem inappropriate if not entirely fanciful, yet after a few bottles (hah!) evidently communicate very nicely...
