Hi guys,
I do my best to open-minded.
To buy wine from estates that don't have a sexy reputation.
And from vintages that are snubbed by many point, um, er, *wine* drinkers.
This often stands me in good stead.
And opens my eyes to a lot of good wines.
But not this time...
Many 1999s are drinking well now.
So, I thought, with my magret de canard at Sunday lunch, let's go for this La Tour du Pin Figeac (one of 2 with exactly the same name, confusingly - the other is owned by Moueix).
Let's be clear. This was a disappointment.
Much more bricking than there should have been and a good, although rather anonymous nose.
The taste was obviously poorly-balanced.
It started off extremely diluted and blah, and continued that way until the middle palate.
There was *something* to redeem it on the aftertaste, but this was more hot and alcoholic than anything else.
OK, after this harsh criticism, I'll say that there's no way I would refuse a glass of this if offered. Indeed, we finished off the bottle. *But* we all found it "inderterminate", disjointed and, above all, prematurely aged.
This is one of the châteaux (along with its namesake, the Moueix estate) that was removed from the most recent classification.
However, the 2006 classification was recently invalidated, so both La Tour du Pin Figeac maintain their cru classé status.
If the bottle we had today is representative, then this is a big mistake.
Best regards,
Alex R.
