2003 Tobin James, James Gang Reserve, Paso Robles, Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah ($38). Alcohol level: 15%. It contains 50% of each grape. This was an admitted attempt by TJ to emulate the blends coming out of Oz. As is their wont, they came up with something completely different.
You start with a huge load of black and red fruit on the nose and upfront. In the middle you find a very complex and well balanced wine despite the high octane that includes much more fruit, smooth tannin, a hint of spice, and a touch of Paso dirt. The finish lingers and lingers. It was much jammier and less peppery than Australian versions.
We matched it with fillet mignon rubbed with Morton rub, wrapped in partially cooked bacon, and grilled over charcoal hunks and hickory chips; along with roast fingerling potatoes and a salad with raspberry/hazelnut vinaigrette.
