WTN: Two Beaujolais

by Bill Buitenhuys » Mon Jul 21, 2008 10:32 am

over 2 nights
2006 George Descombes Morgon This is really awkward on Day 1. No cohesion, monolithic structure, and flat. Day 2 reveals a completely different wine. It’s juicy and vibrant with both plum and sour cherry, filled with minerals and dusty tannins, and pleasantly persistant in the finish. Hold on to this one for a while.

w/grilled chicken (rum, lime, pineapple) w/ grilled veg and jasmine rice
2005 Domaine du Vissoux (Chermette) Beaujolais Vieilles Vignes Cuvée Traditionnelle I can’t have enough of this wine. It’s starting to show a bit of secondary development with a hint of farm, some dried flowers yet there is fruit for days, wonderfully food-friendly acidity, and a tannic structure that says this wine will keep going for years. Drink, hold, enjoy.

Great notes, Bill, thanks!

I had a 2005 Morgon on Saturday (2005 Piron Morgon Cote dy Py) that was gorgeously aromatic, but rather young and tight on the palate. I wish I would have had the chance to revisit it a day later to see if it opened up more. Still, a very nice wine that ought to age well for a while.

I'm not familiar with Piron, Michael. Who brings it in?

I missed the boat on the '05 Vissoux. Phooey!

Tch, David. Chermette didn't make a wrong move in '05, but that Cuvée Traditionelle was a great QPR winner. All mine is sadly gone (who can hold off on opening such a lovely wine? Not I!) but the memories linger on.

I believe it was from Beaune Imports. It was a recommendation from the guys at Marty's in Allston, who were all raving about it. Good call on their part. One of the wines of the day at a 25+ bottle all-day BBQ.

I'm jealous! I loved this wine this Spring. I can't seem to find this anymore in the Bay Area! And...July is not a good shipping time for wine!

I'm down to my last couple. I really want to hide them but they are too good now.
