WTN: 2004 Sella Orbello

by Bill Buitenhuys » Thu Jul 24, 2008 1:22 pm

One of the few reds I've opened recently as temps continue to hover around 110.
2004 Sella Coste della Sesia Orbello (Piedmont) A typical night for us is to drink about a ½ bottle with dinner and maybe a bit more afterwards. This bottle vanished in about 45minutes. It was really a pleasure to drink with Tuscan bean soup. Extremely aromatic, after 4 hours open, with dried herbs, tar, dried roses and lots of blue and red fruit flavor. It has this steminess in the opening flavor profile that I found distracting in earlier bottles but is really growing on me. The tannins are more silky and less gritty than previous and there is this really pleasing acidic backbone. Fun and tasty stuff and a bargin at $15.

Thanks for the reminder, I should pop another of these soon.
My notes are similar, though I didn't really get the stemminess.
But a lovely food wine.
I've enjoyed all the Sella wines I've tried (this, the Lessona, the rose)

It was really pronounced for me, Dale, each time I've had it. Very much Loire cab franc-y. You are right, it's a great food wine, like the Lessona. Haven't had the rose though.

This is Nebbiolo, right? Sounds great.

Think it's Barbera, Nebbiolo, and a couple of other grapes I don't recall (or maybe never heard of before)

Exactly. It looks like a 'kitchen sink blend' but it tastes very coherent, at least to me. (That might be because I have it in inventory, of course.)

I didn't realize that Sella was part of your stable, Oliver. It sure is yummy (as is the Lessona).
