WTN: Can't define it, but I know it when I taste it . . .

I made a short visit to the Mosel recently and dropped into Rieslinghaus Porn in Bernkastel (Hebegasse 11, 54470, (0)6531). Sat down and had myself a tasting, I did. This was a fantastic way to introduce myself to different producer styles in the Mosel. Good selection of the local wines. Is anyone familiar with Jakoby pur? I didn't quite catch it, but I think there was some connection between the winemaker there and at Maximin Grünhaus . . .

In any case, the wines . . .

2007 Van Volxem Rotschiefer Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling Kabinett (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany) 9.5% - the nose is focused and perfumed, mouthfeel only slightly heavy, taste slightly sweet, intense in light flavor, taste more of sugar here and alcohol (or at least intensity) seems to come out later, largely struck me as a sugary wine

2007 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Mosel Riesling Kabinett (Mosel, Germany) 8% - smell rich very peachy nose, the taste adds a great dollop of acid to that peach, simple but precise, this has plenty of zip but a peachiness that lingers, this is a peach

2006 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhauser Abstberg Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling Kabinett (Ruwer, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany) 8% - smell rocky focused chalky nose, taste rounded with delicious tender acid, tad heavier here but I love that tenderness and lime finish, this is a lime that is sweet

2007 Jakoby Pur Kinheimer Hubertuslay Mosel Riesling Spätlese (Mosel, Germany) 9% - smell more herbal on nose, taste rich and rounded, more pear here, doesn't have the acid I long for, best pear syrup I've had in awhile, but don't know how much I could drink, not cloying though, this is a pear

2007 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling Spätlese (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany) 8.5% - smell more vegetal funky nose, taste fruit with a sugared zip, feels simple, lighter, and more built for children, lighter than I would expect for a spätlese and that lightness was welcome, tender savory elements that are fleeting, wears incredibly well, lasting spice of a gewürztraminer, sugar zipped but savory, not sure how

Jakoby is familiar to me as Jakoby-Mathy. I have seen Jakoby pur on some marketing materials though (including a business card I have right here). I don't think there's a connection to Grunhaus as the (very) young son has joined the father in running the estate.

Nice notes though. Most of the wines seem a tad simple from your notes. Yes?

Hmm, I thought there might have been some sort of brotherly connection, but perhaps not.

Yes, to my taste these edged toward simple. But I'm still cutting my teeth on that sweet Mosel style, so lots of first impressions here . . .

Oh if there's a family relationship I would have no idea. I thought you were talking about winemakers moving around.
