Stockholm - wine reccomendations

by Andy » Fri Jul 25, 2008 7:11 am

I'll be near Stockholm end July/beginning of august for promotional work and vacation. I have fond memories of the Lux-Restaurant where inspirative food was paired with an interesting wine-list. Are there any suggestions for other places with good wine-lists?
Thanks in advance!

I travelled to Helsingborg in SW Sweden several times last year. There may be some good wine lists but the expense put me off from about GBP 7 per glass. Alcohol duty is very high.

I would stick to the akvavit if I were you or a Pikla Pils from the Nynashamn brewery near Stockholm :

Trevor,
coincidentally I will be staying near Nynäshamn, so I will definitely check out the brewery!
Regarding pricing, yes mark-ups are remarkably sometimes. However, it seems that in some places where geeks are in hand of the wine selection one can run in to interesting stuff at not too stiff prices. I remember a Gobelsburg Alte Reben for roughly 5€ and some Loimer stuff by the glass at the mentioned Restaurant Lux- not bad for an european capital City.

Hi Andy,
Sorry for not replying earlier, but I am in a cottage by the sea, enjoying the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Here are some short reccos, in the hope they can still be of some value for you.

First, I'd just like to say that while I try to follow what is happening on the restaurant scene in Stockholm, I don't actually get out very often. Anyway, here are some that I think won't leave you dissappointed.

GQ on Kommendörsgatan 23, tel +46 (0) 8 545 67 430, is splendid and they are very strong on German and Austrian wines, but are also good at others. The name is a play on IQ, meaning gastronomic Intelligence.

F12 on Fredsgatan 12 is excellent but is unfortunately closed for summer. They open again for dinner on the 4 August.

Lux is still good, AFAIK, as is Leijontornet, but both are closed until around the 10 August.

The most highly regarded in Stockholm now is Mathias Dahlgren in the building just to the right of Grand Hôtel, across the water from the Royal Castle. I couldn't find anything about summer closure on their website, so they should be open. They are rather heavily booked, however, so getting a table might be difficult.

A nice one is Pontus! (sic), on Brunnsgatan 1. AFAIK see, they are open for dinner except on Mondays. I think most of their wines are available by the glass. They also have a very nice oyster bar, where one can have a selection of oysters to a glass of champagne while one chats with Frank, who is a great source of knowledge regarding oysters. If he is there right now, I don't know, of course. He might well be enjoying his vacation, just like me.

Finally a restaurant on a small island just outside central Stockholm: Restaurant Bockholmen, on the island of Bockholmen. A bit less exclusive, but very charming and marvellously situated. The perfect place for a warm summer's evening.

I hope you will find something that suits you while your are here. in fact, not far from Nynäshamn, on the island Oaxen, is what might be the most fascinating restaurant in the area, yes, in fact in all Sweden. Very special and experimenting. If you are really interested and have the time and money, you should try to get there.

For how long will you be around? I'll be back in town during the weekend 8-10 August. I'll be a bit busy as a commentator on a track and fields competition, but could maybe join you on Saturday evening. Let me know if you are still around by then and would be interested.

Cheers,
Anders

Anders, thanks for this very informative post! I had wanted to go to Dahlgrens earlier when he had his own place, don't know if we can make it this time, however. Haven´t heard about GQ nor of Oaxen, sounds very tempting and interesting. It would be fun with an offline, but we´ll be leaving on thurdsday august 7, unfortunately. If you can fit something in earlier just let me know. I have some difficulty with connection so I´ll check in rather irregularly.
