Rose question

by James Roscoe » Fri Jul 25, 2008 11:04 am

I am going to a dinner tomorrow where the theme is rose wine. I already have a nice rose champagne ready to go. the hostess asked if anyone was bringing a sweet rose for dessert. Other than those undrinkable "white" wines, are there any sweet roses suitable for the dessert course (or even better, the cheese course!)? More to the point, where would I find such an animal?

James, I have tasted Spaetburgunder Rose Eiswein (Bretz). It wasn't great and good luck finding any of that anyway.

I think Gysler has a Spatburgunder BA.
Would Brachetto d'Acqui count? Is that a light red or a dark rose?

That stuff is too good to sit around for too long! I wish I had kept it, but it is in a better place! :D

Dale, the Brachetto I could acquire. I might even have one in the cellar. Does it count?

There's a new animal in the wine world: rosé port. I don't hear good things about it, but it may make for good contrast.

You might just be able to find a Vin de Bugey Cerdon Méthode Ancestrale Rosé ... I saw some in wine shops in San Francisco and NYC when I was over from at least 2 different producers I think - sorry names escape me. It may well clash with dessert, of course, being medium sweet at most - light (only about 8% alcohol), delicate and bubbly from a blend of grapes, usually Gamay and Poulsard, I think! Best drunk in-between cheese & dessert, I'd say. Have fun!

Oh yeah, I had the Croft Pink, tried to put it out of my mind. But that should be easiest to find.
I like the Renardat-Fâche Bugey Cerdon, but wouldn't call it a dessert wine. And probably Brachetto is really a red. :(

In this case I would bring a Brachetto D'Acqui. Especially the Rose Regali.
You can pass this one off as a sweet, rose, and also a sparkling (more spumante rather than true sparkling)
Cheers,
John
