WTN: 2005 Château Tour Saint Bonnet (Bordeaux, Médoc)

High toned cherry with bright lively acidic tannic backbone. Good long finish with a touch of sweetness. Not the most complex wine around, but nice, pleasant, and fresh. Styled in the middle road between claret and modern Bordeaux. This is drinking pretty well now and I think it will improve for at least 7-10 years. A rare Bordeaux bargain at under $15.

Matt, did you have this with food or on it's own?

Mostly on it's own, although I had a few nibbles of cheese here or there. After I wrote the WTN I had dinner and a bit of wine with dinner. Why do you ask?

I have generally found that you can find some decent qpr in Bordeaux between $10 and $15 if you pick up an '05. The ripeness of the vintage is allowing a lot of the lesser houses to shine. I drink a lot of it with daily fare such as meatloaf and london broil. They tend to be especially food-friendly.

i've always liked this vineyard - been buying when i can for years. haven't seen it around here lately unfortunatly. if you can find ch. liversan '05 i'd recommend buying that as well - maybe for longer down the road. terrific wine and should be under $20.

Thanks for the TN; I bought a case of that en premieur and it should be delivered any day now.

Like David, I've been drinking this Chateau for decades. It used to be titled Ch La Tour St Bonnet and in my young just-starting-to-drink days we went to a hotel restaurant for a meal. The winelist had Ch La Tour and I ordered it because I vaguely remembered that La Tour was supposed to be a top claret. Of course, when the wine came it was Ch La Tour St Bonnet, but we enjoyed it anyway.

Decent claret for the price.

Any other particularly good vintages I should know about?
