WTN: Kaesler Old Vines Shiraz 2004

by Jay Labrador » Mon Jul 28, 2008 12:18 pm

I've enjoyed Kaesler's WOMS Cabernet Shiraz and Fave Grenache before so I was expecting good things from this Barossa offering.

Inky black. Very minty aromas right out of the bottle. Underneath, there's some mocha as well. Big wine with prominent oak but it also has the acidity to avoid jaminess and provide structure. Surprisingly, not all that sweet. Soft tannins make this quite forward and approachable. The palate is dominated by bittersweet chocolate. Well-balanced and the 15% alcohol is not a problem as this wine avoids any heat. Finishes long. The flavors still seem primary now so it might gain complexity with a bit more time. Very good.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Dominated by chocolate? I don't mind a chocolate note once in a while, but I'm not sure I would want a wine where it domintates. Maybe if there was a big backing of black cherry fruit. Heck let's up the alcohol & get one of my favorite treats!

You might want to steer clear of some McLaren Vale wines. Some I have described as 'liquid chocolate' amongst other things. But I think it can sit in well with the alcohol and fruit although these styles are probably only one glass wines.
