WTNs: Amancaya v. Catena Malbec

by Oswaldo Costa » Sat Aug 02, 2008 7:24 am

My sister is throwing a birthday party for me and a cousin and I, of course, need to choose a wine that will safeguard a modicum of oenological propriety. So last night Marcia and I tasted the two highest level Catena wines we could find for under $30. Since we’ve had the Catena Malbec several times but never tried the Amancaya, we tasted them blind to reduce bias.

2006 Catena Malbec 14% (US price $12/Brazil price $26)
Dark plum color. Simple nose of cherry, oak and alcohol. Good acidity, solid but simple fruit, with a touch of green stems. After some brie, chocolate notes come through. Simple but pleasurable, with good balance and body. I have poor olfactory memory, but this was clearly the Catena Malbec, not only because of some déjà-vu but also because of the relative straightforwardness that I would expect from a monovarietal without particularly exceptional terroir. Good food wine, good choice at a restaurant, but not particularly noteworthy on a stand-alone basis. Aged 12 months in a mix of French and American oak.

2006 Amancaya 14% (US price $14/Brazil price $28)
Dark plum color. More lively nose of blackberry, glue and alcohol. Velvety, complex and elegant in the mouth, clearly more Bordeaux like and therefore clearly the Amancaya. After some cheese, it became thinner, seeming to lose mid-palate compared to the Catena, and ended with a tart note. But it evolved gracefully in the glass and ended with a classy cedar note. Perhaps this is a little less robust than the Catena so that its superiority becomes less apparent with food, but it seemed to both of us clearly the better wine on a stand-alone basis. At $14, I would definitely call this a steal. Amancaya is a blend of 50% cabernet and 50% malbec and is produced by Bodegas Caro, a joint venture between Catena Zapata & Château Lafite-Rothschild. Aged 12 months in French oak, 15% of it new.

I bought an Amancaya last year after one of these neighborhood tastings I do, where we'd featured Argentinian malbec and where I'd tasted some 15 or so other wines, not including the Amancaya because I didn't find it until later, to make the final selection. All were good and terrific values, but when I came across and tasted the Amancaya, I knew it would have been my first place wine. It was just that much more complex and sophisticated. A crazy value. Oh, and the Catena was one of the wines I pretasted and passed on for all the reasons you mention. And around here it was close to $20--there were better values for less.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Yes! I may be stretching things a bit, but it reminded me of Tignanello (it's a Supermendozan! :))

Both wines combine a classy French element, from a good parcel of velvety cabernet, with a more robust indigenous element, from the local grape.

Oswaldo..... nice notes. For me, if you have to choose a wine for a gathering, the Amancaya is the "easier" wine.... in Buenos Aires, this wine is known as the Caro Petit (this is what the local distributor tells me).

BTW, what do you think of the Caro (the Amancaya's big brother?). Im personally not a fan.... overpriced IMO - although it does sell very well and we have a loyal following that wants every vintage....

I have never tried the Caro and was curious to do so, having liked the Amancaya. Your note is not encouraging, but perhaps I'll still give it a try! By the way, Alejandro, what is your favorite Argentine dessert wine (of any color)?

Hi, Alejandro, I'm having a hard time finding these in Brazil or the US. The only thing that I found here that might be comparable is the Rutini Vin Doux Naturel - would you say it's comparable, or a notch below? Thanks!
