Cost-Benefit

Anyone know the going rate for an ad on p. 2 of the NYT Sunday Magazine section? Today's has a full-pager for the V-1 Decanter which is said not only to preserve wine by a vacuum mechanism but “improves the character of a red wine by aerating it”. I wouldn’t be so crass as to ask for the data, but I am curious about how many of these contraptions would have to be sold ($55 at Amazon) to cover the cost of the ad.

Dan, a little quick googling reveals nothing about The Times - some of these guys won't pull out the rate card until they're doing a deal. But as a reference point, the NY Daily News will charge you $62,000 for a full-page "financial, tobacco, liquor, broadcast and miscellaneous" run-of-paper ad in the regular newspaper. I rather suspect the glossy Times Magazine would go for quite a bit more. ;)

So using that number, you'd have to sell 1128 decanters to pay for the ad. For the sake of argument, let's say your profit is half of the cost. You'd need to sell 2255 decanters before you began to make a profit, or about 45 per state, which seems very easily possible. I suspect most readers of this forum would invest their hard earned $55 in something more worthwhile, if less permanent. :D

The Costco ad says:

"Pouring a bottle of red wine into a decanter before serving aerates it and improves its character by allowing it to “breathe.” Until now, wine left in the decanter had to be funneled back into the bottle to prevent spoilage. Now, with the V-1 Vacuum Decanter, you can have the advantages of decanting red wine with no disadvantages. You can vacuum-preserve the wine right in the decanter.
The Metrokane V-1 Decanter, designed by Ed Kilduff of Pollen Design, was inspired by the Apollo Spaceship. Each decanter is individually hand-blown of the finest lead-free crystalline quartz. The Vacuum Stopper will hold the vacuum for days, and your wine will be preserved for the next serving."

#1) How many of us have wine left in the decanter? #2) :...inspired by the Apollo Spaceship." Give me a break, even NASA didn't call it a spaceship. Beam me up, please.
