Mo'Cool weekend weather outlook

by Bob Henrick » Mon Aug 04, 2008 8:00 am

For those interested, I have posted in Jay Baldwin's thread in the offline forum. In my post I have a couple click-able links for surface weather outlook maps for the period August 11-17 which show precipitation and temperature expectations. Click this link to go directly to Jay's thread. then look for the snoopy dog with a golf club. :-)

I hope they have better meteorologists where you are. In my neck of the woods the weatherman can't even predict yesterday's weather.

But what do all those lines in blue and red mean?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

James, first lets consider the precipitation chart. In the area we are interested (southern Michigan) the dashed blue lines means that climatologically speaking one would expect to receive six tenths of an inch of rainfall during the period 8/11 and 8/17. the solid blue line with the figure 40 indicates that there is a 40% chance that rainfall received during the period will be below that six tenths. So, it looks as if weather is going to be on our side for the picnic.

Now, we consider the temperature chart. the dashed blue lines indicate the climatological normals for the period in time, looks to me as if the normal would be 72 degrees. The solid blue lines shows us that in Southeast Michigan there is a 33% chance that the temperature will be below the climatological normals. That 72 degrees above is a simple average between the normal high and the usual overnight low. These for that area in August is 81.4 and 62.2, which will give an average of 71.8, or 72 degrees.

A more through discussion can be found in the links just below.

My dear departed friend Harold Pancratz was a weather-man. When we used to go birding together, sometimes on week long trips, the last question one would ask was about the weather!!! 20 minute story about what might happen in the next 4/5 hrs. Naturally the cloud formations were the highlight.

BobH and Harold would make a great pair of pals!

What a great forecasting lesson, Bob, or we can go to Accucast,

http://www.accuweather.com/forecast3.as ... 3&metric=0

And let your fellow pros decipher all of that and tell us 76 degrees and cloudy on the Saturday of the picnic.

Harold was not much of a wine drinker but feel sure a glass of marsanne would be appreciated!

Weather forecasts are made possible because of the thousands of hourly surface weather observations, and hundreds of upper air measurements made twice each day. the observations and measurements are made and disseminated by the National Weather Service and it's personnel. Without the free access of these measurements and observations, the for pay weather companies such as the Weather Channel, and Accu Weather would not even exist. Being a former NWS employee, I hope that every one understands that I am partial to the original.
