SWR: You know the economy is bad when...

by Brian Gilp » Wed Aug 06, 2008 10:48 am

A few years ago I tried to buy 3 Reidel stems (one Sommelier and two Vinum) from an internet source. The order arrives without the vinum stems included and the Sommelier has a snapped stem. One is directed to the web site to report damaged shipments which I do but there is no place to note items missing so I call to follow up the next day. I was promptly shipped the proper order and this time the Sommelier arrives intact but one of the two Vinums is smashed. Back to the internet to report breakage. Wait a week+ and nothing. I call but no one answers so I send an e-mail and wait some more and nothing. Finally I call again and get through to the same individual that was so prompt and helpful the first time. Its obvious they do not believe me know but said that they would send out the replacement but bill me for the replacement and then credit me when I send them the broken glasses. There was no questioning on the first claim but now its obviously that they think I am trying to scam them. That's fine. Its there lack of quality packing that is causing the problem but I can live with this solution. But ultimately no glass arrive and my card is not billed. I decide to just let it go instead of wasting more time and energy over one stem. I just right it off and vow to never deal with them again and I thought the company had done the same since they obviously assumed I was trying to scam them.

Fast forward to now. Yesterday I check my personel e-mail after having not done so for a few weeks and to my surprise I have multiple e-mails from this company with special offers etc. This is the first contact from the company since they never shipped my replacement glass. I am sure that there is a rational reason as to how this happens but I do find it funny.

Rational reason - they have your e-mail address. E-mail advertising is cheap.

Shipping Riedels is a dangerous business, but I really wonder why nobody has gotten it right yet.
