2006 Hans Wirsching Iphöfer Kalb Franken Silvaner Kabinett Trocken (Franken, Germany) cork closure, 13.5% - appears pale straw gold, smell upfront herbal cheese, love that simple savoryness of the nose, rounded but with lots of hay and herbs, mouthfeel is slightly viscous but then the palate is slammed with a wonderful dollop of acid upfront, taste is full flavored, very green, much like an unripe strawberry, finish offers rather quite a bit of intensity, at times moving toward a combo of earth, stone, and grapefruit with oomph, I liked it, but didn’t love it—that acid is addictive, but was most interesting was the distinctiveness between this and the Julius-Echter-Berg silvaner I had a week previous from the same producer, same vintage, this wine was more about intensity and earthiness while the JEB was brighter, more tang, more fruit element, both had some oomph which I would guess is a function of the vintage, still enthralled with Franken silvaner the more differences I am able to experience, great learning experience for less than 8 euro. 2007 Bürgerspital (zum hl. Geist) Würzburger Stein Franken Silvaner Kabinett Trocken (Franken, Germany) cork closure, 12.5% - appears gold with spritz, smell soft orange and appealing tangerine, it is hard for me to describe the smell of a silvaner, but it is always distinct and always makes my mouth water, mouthfeel spritz upfront, just a touch of substance, taste zippy pleasant citrus, full flavor, intense lime/grapefruit mix, very zippy, slightly rind-heavy on finish, initial sip was very refreshing, paired nicely with fresh kielbasa from local Worcester Polish market and homemade kapoosta, but the best bit of wine was that bit leftover once the meal was finished, it reminded me of the meal and was just plain tasty, lovely wine, less than 10 euro at an airport duty free shop, I’d pick one up again while flying.
