In What Strange World Does This Make Sense?

Gordon Ramsay makes around $7 million a year. No doubt deserves it, hard working guy.

Wolfgang Puck makes $16 mill - widespread food empire, been doing it a long time.

Top money earner as a 'chef'? Rachel Ray with $18 M.

There ain't no justice.

She doesn't make money as a chef. She doesn't have any restaurants (at least not that I'm aware of).

I thought she made money from smiling on television. And there are plenty of folks like that worth criticising out there.. :D

That's why I put the word 'chef' in paretheses. But she was included in the top chefs rankings for salaries for some reason.

But hey - I'll bet that figure includes fees for that new dog food of hers. Or was that gourmet paté. Or could she tell the difference?

Celine Dion probably makes more than Itzhak Perlman.
The Olsen twins probably each make more than Helen Mirren.
Dan Brown probably makes more than Cormac McCarthy

Maybe the most offensive part of this news item, now that I think about it, was them calling Rachel Ray a chef!

But then look at some of the brainless (though not chestless) 'talent' they call actresses these days.

Bill,
You have something against breasts? Personally I find her refreshing.

Not at all, as long as they are topped off with a modicum of brains as well.
Personally, while I have seen people saying they find Ray personally attractive, she just doesn't pluck my strings. I came across a site where they had a poll on who was the more attractive, she or Giada De Laurentiis

Here you go, what do you think? For me, BTW, the hottie food chickette would be Laura Calder on Food Network, but then I've reached the age where I see a mother and daughter (late teens early 20s) walking together and 98% of the time think to myself how much more attractive the mother is.....

Dale, I admit that I did not know who the Olsen twins or Cormac McCarthy were.
As a Canadian, I am of course familiar with out most annoying anorexic singer, as a classical music fan, I love Perlman's work (along with Zukerman), and it would be hard not to at least know Brown as a name author, though I have read only the one book and wondered what all the fuss was about.

I count it as a mark in my favour that I had no idea who the Olsens were....

As far as Rachel, that paragon of steatopygian pulchritude, were I given to admiration of such qualities I should doubtless prefer the more callipygian charms of Nigella, were it not a bit cheeky for me to say so. Fortunately I am as pure as the freshly driven snow and thus not given to pondering such matters.....

For me, Nigella's charms are far more than merely callipygian (last heard in the Limeliter's classic "Vicky, turn your back on me"). In any food hottie contest, Nigella wins my vote hands down. RR OTOH reminds me too much of one of the Chipmunks to be taken seriously in any regard and Giada looks too thin for a cook ("never trust a thin cook").

Pretty good pasta "presentation" there, Mark! (Did WLDG merge with Wine Therapy? I've been away. :-)

To Bill's original question, the reason as usual is You. (Plural. In English, formerly "Youse" and regionally "Y'all.") You the market that pays its money and takes its choice. (Same reason software is now dominated by products legendary for mediocrity and unreliability, but offering a standard and imposing it, opening problems software experts long considered solved. Same reason computers I now shop for boast "Genuine" V*sta operating system even as extreme experts counsel me to avoid it like herpes.)

Same reason (back to the question) people thought Julia Child a "French Chef" though she was neither and started cooking at 40. (Even she sometimes forgot, protesting once she'd never claimed to be a French Chef, without also protesting about all the TV episodes and books in her own hand that did so.)

Puck actually was a chef, but a local-boy-makes-good article in Hr. Prónay's former European food magazine profiled Puck instead as successful marketer. (Title "Ein Wiener in den Wilden Westen!" and as a point of obscure trivia, still not as exuberant as local-boy-makes-good articles from same country when its expat became California governor five years ago. If you admitted in Vienna that week that you were from California, everyone wanted to talk politics. And forget paying your own tab at any restaurant.)

'Mr Bam? Ah, you mean Emeril Largeass!

And what of Bobby Flak?

What happened to the likes of the Galloping Gourmet, Graham Kerr (before he had a heart attack, saw God and stopped guzzling all through his show) - they may or may not be chefs in the traditional sense (Kerr certainly wasn't) but they sure were good foodie entertainers.

Even Bourdain (does he still do any cooking) is an entertaining read.

They are all in the entertainment busineess. Why not pick the easiest one to look at? These pictures are great, makes me want to eat sauces, muffins and pasta.

Nope, no appeal there for me at all.
Perhaps I am at a disadvantage having heard what happens when she opens her mouth on camera (shudder). Just have no time at all for that one.

I am with you all the way on this one, Mark (athough I do have to say that Nigella looks much better in some photos than in others). Rachael just doesn't do it for me and Giada's a little scary.

I'm curious why this was posted in the wine forum and not the kitchen? Or friends & fun?

(Having no television, I've never seen any of the people mentioned in any of these posts..... except Julia once back when I was a child.)

For me, it was why so many postings on such a topic? Guys being guys, the pictures are an obvious factor and the message is clear enough. If you want to draw attention, dress up (!) your postings.
