WTN: Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Josephshofer Spatlese 05

by Sue Courtney » Tue Aug 12, 2008 4:45 pm

Got to taste this gorgeous wine at a tasting last Wednesday night. It was a blind tasting and here are my notes .....

"Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Josephshofer Riesling Spatlese 2005
Light yellow gold, Germanic style - sweet, honeyed, low-alcohol with a viscous texture reminiscent of a light nectar. It has a light attack in the palate with a fine backbone of acidity to balance the sweetness, there's predominant ripe red apple fruit with just a hint of earthiness and the luscious aftertaste lasts for ages. Absolutely delicious."

Here in New Zealand it has a price tag of $62.99 a bottle - so I didn't buy. Just not in my budget right now. Tasted some of the bottle leftovers again on Friday and it was garned some peach and was, perhaps, even more yum.

Cheers,
Sue

The Josephshofer is a lovely site & Kesselstatt is really improving as a producer over the last 10 years or so. Anegret Reh Gardner (I may not have spelled that correctly) is also a fantastic ambassador for German wine.

Didn't you have this before?

I'll agree that the $63 is steep. The same wine would run me $29.99 US.

I tasted a Scharzhofberger Spatlese '05 and a Scharzhofberger Kabinett '05 from the same producer earlier in the year, (March & July respectively) according to a search on my own website. First time I've had the Josephshofer Spatlese '05.

I was very positive on the Scharzhofberger Spatlese. Would love to have the opportunity to taste the Scharzhofberger and the Josephshofer Spatleses together sometime.

Sue, I really enjoyed the 05 Joshephshofer Spatlese also, (as you saw in a April posting of mine). A very rich and satisfying wine. As David pointed out the pricing here state side is much more generous. I paid around $33 USD here in Oregon.
I had an 05 Josephshofer LGK Auslese also, this was pretty much the same flavor profile as the Spatlese but times 10! It clocked in at around $90!! (one of those once in a lifetime purchases I dont make very often).
Lets talk about the Joshephshofer Kabinetts now...I have had the 03 & 05 and they are very very nice wines, very crisp versions of the melt in you mouth Spatlese and Auslese, and the best part is the 03 I can get for $17.00 USD and the 05 for $20 USD! such a great price for a nice wine.

Cheers,
Michael

I guess the 05 Kabinett tastes a bit like an ordinary year Spatlese too. Great pricing. I'm
