WTN: Last week's tasting at Wine Depot

by Jay Labrador » Fri Aug 15, 2008 3:39 pm

Notes from Wine Depot's Uncommon Grapes tasting.

Angoves Nine Vines Viognier 2007 - Muted nose. Light, sweetish, peachy. Long but bitter finish. Decent enough.

Trimbach Sylvaner 2006 - Light, very dry, watery. Not good.

Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2007 - Light. Apples. Pleasant, sweet and easy.

Villa Wolf Gewurztraminer 2006 - The front label says Gewurz but the back label says Pinot Gris. Spicy, spritzy, sweet, friendly, lychee. Dry finish. Very nice. Could conceivably be Pinot Gris despite what the front label says.

Kilikanoon Prodigal Grenache 2004 - Very sweet and very oaky. Soft. Not exactly flabby, but definitely lacks structure.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Grenache is an uncommon grape?

In these parts it's unheard of!

You usually seem to drink quite a mix of wines, or are you far from the norm for whom this tasting was intended?

I guess you could say that. I've tried most of these before but the store is beside my parents' house and I was visiting so I decided to drop by for the tasting.
