WTN: Saint Croix Vineyards - Delaware 2002

by Peter May » Fri Aug 15, 2008 5:13 pm

Saint Croix Vineyards is in Minnesota near Minneapolis.
This wine is made from the Delaware variety. 10.6%abv. The label says 'Semi-sweet', but I'd say it would be better described as 'off dry'.

I sipped it after dinner over a few nights.

It has a pineapple flavour with a riesling like undercurrent of petrol tang. There's an interesting twist of acidity, like you get with pineapple.

I enjoyed sipping it, chilled, and on its own.

Peter, thanks very much for the unusual note. I have very limited tasting experience with Delaware because too darn few examples ever make it around to the offlines I've been at, and I have yet to tour some of the NY wineries where it is made.

This Minnesotan example, though, sounds like a good varietal example. Delaware is a labrusca hybrid and that petrolly note that you encountered is also expressed in varietal Niagara wine, only to a much stronger degree.

Interesting. There is a winery not far from here that makes a lot of Delaware. Their Delaware Ice Wine is a real treat. Just curious - how did you manage to obtain this in England?
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
