WTN: 2004 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza

by Oswaldo Costa » Sat Aug 16, 2008 10:46 am

After our recent comparisons between Amancaya & Bodegas Caro v. Catena Malbec & D.V. Malbec-Malbec, Marcia wanted me to taste the more expensive Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon that she had tasted and liked while I was in NY last month.

2004 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza 14% (US price $40/Brazil price $62)
Inky plum color. Elegant and balanced nose of plum, blackberry and vanilla, with some initial saltiness and, later, tar notes. Despite the blackberry, no hint of cedar box or lead pencil/graphite, so not likely to be confused with Bordeaux. If anything, this smells more like malbec than cabernet, suggesting that the characteristic taste of Argentinean malbec owes more to the adjective than the noun (or just more so than I previously considered). Tasted without food, this showed fine tannins and clear but unobtrusive acidity, resulting in good grip. Also good mid-palate and finish, with well integrated alcohol. After food and aeration, the gestalt of the wine settled into a state of straightforward but harmonious balance that kept me reaching out repeatedly for my glass. This is a smooth, quality wine that was a pleasure to drink, though I would expect, at this level, more complexity or uniqueness of personality. While drinking well now, this has another five, perhaps ten, years of life ahead of it, and may very well develop, in time, what I miss at this point. Aged 15 months in French oak, 80% of it new. Grapes sourced from two vineyards: Lot 3 from La Pirámide vineyard in Agrelo, alt. 3,100 ft. and Lot 2 from Domingo vineyard in Tupungato, alt. 3,770 ft.

Oswaldo, thanks for sharing your notes. Can you source the Angelica Zapata Cabernet in Brazil...? If so, Im guessing it will be a much better value... over 60 Dollars for the Catena Alta is a very high price... guess Catena's distributor in Brazil is raking it in...

Yes, I can find the 2003 Angelica Zapata CS for the equivalent of US$41 - I'll give it a try.

I tried the Angelica cab tonight and will post notes tomorrow.

After you mentioned the Bodegas Caro the week before last, I became curious and tried it about a week ago (perhaps you saw my note).

The Amancaya I tried last Tuesday (from the two cases served at the party I mentioned) tasted less good to me than the one I sampled originally. I wonder if there's significant bottle variation...

This coming Wednesday Marcia and I are going to a dinner featuring Laura Catena and her wines. We'll be trying 07 Luca chard, 06 Paulucci Malbec, 07 Luca PN, 06 Luca Syrah, 06 Luca Malbec and 03 Beso de Dante. Looking forward to that.

Thanks for the note on the 2004 Oswaldo. I have a stash of the 2003's that I found under priced locally. Initially I told the wine guy in my biggest store that it was mispriced. He said no, that the price is correct, so I took about 8 of them at $19.99 each.I have not yet tried one and am wondering if perhaps you (or anyone else here in the forum) has in fact tried the 2003 vintage.

Hi, Bob, unfortunately I haven't tried the 2003, perhaps Alejandro has. But these wines never go dumb, as far as I know, so there should be little risk in opening your first this year and then tracking its evolution for the next seven years. :)

I have tried both vintages, though I dont have any formal notes. Will say that Catena had to consistent vintages in 02 and 03, so I would not anticipate much variation... also, bear in mind that Catena does a lot of microclimate blending so this does do quite a bit in ensuring consistency year in and out.

Thank you very much for your reply Alejandro, I will have to pull a cork on one at my first available worthy occasion. A lot of the high end wines coming from Argentina these days are pricing themselves beyond my ability to buy them, so I am lucky to have gotten these at a price I could afford.
