WTN: Ridge LyttonSprings '06...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Aug 17, 2008 3:17 pm

My Z-List shipment arrived last week & couldn't wait to try:
1. Ridge Calif LyttonSprings (80% Zin, 16% PS, 4% Carignane; DryCreekVlly; 14.7%; Drk: 1/08-1/18: JO) 2006: Dark color; strong very spicy/blackberry/raspberry/Zin slight peppery slight earthy/dusty very light Am.oak/pencilly nose; tart bit tight/lean quite spicy/blackberry/Zin/raspberry rather dusty/earthy light pencilly/oak bit tannic flavor; med.long quite spicy/bright/blackberry/Zin bit lean/tannic/tight light pencilly/Am.oak finish; pleasant/attractive Zin but just that for now. $32.00

And a wee bloody pulpit:
1. One thing that always strikes me about the LyttonSprings is that it speaks more of RussianRvr Zin, than DryCreek. This '06 is no exception. This is another good/solid/four-square LyttonSprings. Though enjoyable, it seems a bit tight and restrained right now. I'm confident that its best yrs are before and wouldn't bother to try one for another 6mo-yr. I was also struck how this LS speaks less of Ridge winemaking and more of LS terroir. The Draper perfume is not very obvious. Maybe it's just an early phase and that character will start to come out. What the heck would I know.

When you drive up there, RSN I'm sure, you'll easily figure out why. They're in the DCV appellation, but pretty much in the southeastern corner of it, and on the ridge (heh, heh) between DCV and RRV.
It's pretty hot up there in the daytime, but they do get more afternoon breeze than the upper DCV, and I wouldn't be surprised if the fog hits them first in the wee hours of the morning.

What the heck would I know..
A heck of a lot. 8)
