I just got back from the importer's presentation of the wines of Colonial Estate Barossa (very good Envoy GSM 2005 and Etranger Cabernet Sauvignon 2006), Leconfield Coonawarra ( Good Chardonnay 2006 but shrill and austere Old Vine Riesling 2006, and good, competent reds), and Brokenwood (very good Chardonnay 2006, Forest Edge Vineyard Chardonnay 2007, Indigo Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006 and Shiraz 2006). The real discovery of the evening was the:
Brokenwood Umpire's Vineyard Semillon,Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - 50% Semillon with the remainder equally divided between the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Ripe tropical fruit sweetness married to a vibrant acidity. Tropical fruit salad. Yellow fruits - mango and pineapple. Very fresh-tasting when cool, gaining depth with apricot flavors as it warms up. Finishes with a refreshing bitter marmalade. This is perfectly balanced and great for current drinking. I don't really see this developing further but that shouldn't matter as it's quite excellent now. The Brokenwood website says this dessert wine was made by the cordon cut process to achieve high sugar through berry shrivel.
