Ryan-
Thanks for the update on the 2004 L'Oriatire....I had it about 8 months ago and came away with similar impressions. I need to buy more of this...I really do.
FWIW, there have been some unfavorable comments regarding the 2005 of this...have you had it?

Semi-dry, which I didn't expect..

Interesting. I've had spätburgunders up to spätlese level but mostly trocken and I don't think I've ever noticed significant r.s. either. Not sure it sounds appealing.

Haven't had the 2005. What are folks saying about it? If they let the alcohol get away from them I could see it ruining the wine - in fact, even in 2004, the fault that kept from getting a fully "Exceptional" rating from me was that raw alcohol note. Suprising, since most of the big southern Rhone wines have relatively high alcohol but manage not to show it. Had I the money (this bottle was provided by a friend), I'd certainly buy some for short term cellaring - should be interesting to follow.

Checking my old notes, it turns out that the 2003 I had was the Haut-Coustias bottling. That blew this out of the water, despite the fact that the Reserve is supposed to be a 'better' bottling - although 2003 was a tremendous vintage. I wonder, was 2004 that much less succesful a vintage, or is this wine one of those unfortunate situations where the Reserve got too much effort? Just for reference, here's my note for the 2003:

Domaine de L'Oratoire St. Martin Haut-Coustias Cairanne - Cotes-du-Rhone 2003
Huge personality of cherry, black raspberry, minerals, and cocoa. Huge, firm finish. My lord, what a wine! 60% Mourvedre, 40% Grenache. Of all the wines I've had from the Rhone, only the single best Chateauneuf I've tasted beats this. Great value. This should age very well. 92 [7/28/07]

And it's still only beat by the best Chateauneuf I've had (the 2001 Pegau Reservee - lord, that was a gorgeous wine!).

If it wasn't such a well made wine other wise I probably would not have cared for it, but beneath that hint of RS was a very nice Pinot. Still, not the sort of wine I'd want more than one healthy glass of. But with Indian, it was perfect.

Ryan,
If memory serves correctly, poster Tim York, has reported on multiple incidents of reductive quality to the 2005. Not a bit of reduction, but a bunch.
Perhaps Tim will see this and comment.
