WTN: Wieninger ‘Herrenholz’ Grüner Veltliner 2006

by Bill Hooper » Sat Aug 23, 2008 7:47 pm

Upon unscrewing the cap, this immediately asserted itself as one of the spiciest Grüner Veltliners I’ve tasted in a while. I was almost bowled over by white pepper and sea salt at arms length! Wieningers Herrenholz is regularly quite spicy, but this is ridiculous (but also much fun.) It is very pure, focused and clean -zero botrytis and rather firm for ’06. It is of lime and grapefruit with bits of underripe asian pear, celery, lima bean and green bell-pepper with a wet-sand mineral and a misty, salty, white pepper and pine nut spice. The acid is punctual and the alcohol well-behaved. 13,0% alc. $18 -is it too early to declare a QPR wine of the year?

Prost!

Well, in that case Wieninger is it! By the way Michael, what is the price in Wien?

The "bargain" level 2006 Austrians are perhaps the biggest success in 2006, regularly punching above their weight (while some of the Smaragd level wines can be a bit top heavy).

Bill,

I am in no way an expert in prices. The 2006 is sold out ince long. I found a price for the 2007 @ EUR7.49; the 2006 will not have been that much different.

Danke Michael,

Bei deinem Heuriger kostet eine Flasche 15,00 Euro. Es kostet wahrscheinlich mehr als im Laden.

Servus!

Translating Bill:

Thank you Michael, at Fritz's Heurigen place a bottle is 15 Euros, probably more than retail.

True, of course.

Sorry,

I don't often get to write in German. I need the practice!
