WTN: 2004 Eugen Muller Forster Stift Eiswein

by Andrew Burge » Tue Aug 26, 2008 5:21 am

Thierry Thiese's portfolio doesn't come into Australia, but I recently managed to secure a small stash which includes some of his wines recently. I believe this is one of them. I hadnt heard of Eugen Muller before, so I guess this is not a top ranking Eiswein. But it is fun and tasty nonetheless.

What an odd cork - seems to taper at the bottom end, as if the bottle neck narrows before it widens again. But the wine inside seems OK. This pours as a rich and oily in texture. Golden yellow in the glass, possibly with a pinkish tinge? Nose of lime zest, white flowers, honeysuckle, lemon, and a touch of plasticene/petroleum jelly. Palate texture reflects the pour - very viscous and honeyed. Flavour wise its a fruit basket - orange marmalade, quince, pear, raisins, sultanas and a touch of plasticene again, leading into a lush ever so slightly zippy finish of lime pith and sultanas, that eases gently and cleanly away over time. This level of sweeetness is very new world to me, but the fruit purity underneath is different. A little botrytis, but it doesn’t drive or dominate.

A lovely change.

Cheers

Indeed Eugen Muller is in Terry's portfolio. There are sometimes some real Pfalz bargains there.

I don't generally look to the Pfalz for eiswein, as the results are too often cloying for me & botrytis often intrudes on what I prefer to be a purer fruit expression.

cloying

Must have been those supermarket Eiswein shit that is labelled as "Eiswein" or something like that outside Germany. It`s picked by machines and not handpicked, a tit-for-tat response for putting wooden chips into wine or freezing the grapes after harvesting and calling it Eiswein...

What an odd cork - seems to taper at the bottom end, as if the bottle neck narrows before it widens again

That is due to the fact because the cork gets stuffed in the bottle neck from the top. You might have noticed that there is no other way to put it in ;););) Never saw a cork that tapers at the top, how should that work???

Edit:
lol, you are right. Damn language barrier  That`s really odd. Shouldn`t write those sarcastic responses without referring to my dictionary. Seems like I am lacking in practising my english.
