WTN: 2005 Catena Alta Malbec

by Oswaldo Costa » Fri Aug 29, 2008 8:17 am

2005 Catena Alta Malbec Mendoza 14% (US price $43/Brazil price $65)
Deep purple color. Fragrant nose of plum and oak vanilla, with tobacco and herbs. Good acidity, balanced by sweet, opulent fruit. Light to medium tannins. Very good but, as with the recently tasted Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon, I would expect, at this level, more complexity or uniqueness of personality. I thought this equivalent in quality to the Alta Cabernet Sauvignon, but Marcia preferred the latter. A level below the Vina Cobos Marchiori Vineyard malbec and the Achaval-Ferrer single vineyard malbecs (which, admittedly, cost more). Aged 12 months in French oak, 50% of it new. Grapes sourced from five microclimates: Lot 18 from Angelica vineyard in Lulunta (2,850 ft), Lot 4 from La Pirámide vineyard in Agrelo (3,100 ft), Lot 1 from Altamira vineyard in La Consulta (3,000 ft) and Lots 3 and 9 from Adrianna vineyard in Tupungato (4,600 and 4,725 ft).

Nice note Oswaldo. I have not been drinking too many malbecs of late but winter is a-coming so am prepared up here in AB-land!!
I usually stick with the $25/30 wines as noted in that tremendous Open Mike a couple of years back.

Just to add some perspective..... the Cobos Marchiori Malbec carries a US price of approx. USD 150, and the Achaval Single Vineyards approx. USD105. It would be great if the US based members could update this with the latest "street price".

I will try to get out tomorrow to my BAWS and see which if any of these are available, and report back. I think I have mentioned before that I have some (several) 2003 Catena Alta cabernets, but haven't yet opened one. If anyone has experience (or even advice) with the vintage I would love to hear it.

Oswaldo,

I have the '04 Catena Alta Malbec in my cellar. I was planning to hold it for another year, at least. Would the '05 have benefited from additional aging?

Hi, Sam, while neither closed or infanticide, I would guess that it will get a little better every year for at least the next five years.

Sam, I agree with Oswaldo that the Catena Altas will still have various years of excellent drinking ahead. IMO, a 2004 vintage of this caliber will begin its peak drinking plateau in 2009-10.
