This wine is juicy!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Mon Sep 01, 2008 11:43 am

Here is a good point for discussion..hopefully?!

Not a word that is used a lot when writing a TN but I have to admit I use the term "juicy" a few times. For me, and possibly others, I am usually referring to the finish. In my world, I am thinking of acidity above all else. What do others think?

A wine retailer in the USA has trademarked the word "juicy," among other words, as descriptions for wines. I've been told that he's tried to sue others for using some of the words in their ads and shelf talkers.

Bob, Hi....

For me, the term "juicy" can have either positive or negative implications, depending on how it is used. On the negative side, a wine whose major characteristic relates to juciness implies to me a wine that is too-too perhaps even tutti-fruiti fruity. On the positive side, and here we seem to be together, a wine that finishes as juicy is showing fine balance between fruits and acidity.

Bob
My first intinct was that you were describing mouth-watering/refreshing acidity coupled with still strong fruit.

Bob, I haven't thought of the term juicy as having an undesirable connation, but can see how for some it may. For me, it is when the acidity of the wine makes my mouth fill with saliva, and the fruitiness of the wine that also fills the mouth. I think I find this most often in whites, but can also apply the term to a red. I often refer to it as Jolly Rancher acidity. For those who do not know what a Jolly Rancher is, it is a fruit flavored candy with a high content of citric acidity added. in the manufacturing process.

You though provoker you! :D
