BTN: killing time at Logan with BBW

by Keith M » Wed Sep 03, 2008 5:35 pm

An hour to kill at Logan International Airport gave me the chance to check out what they had on tap at the Boston Beer Works in the terminal. Only the Fenway Pale Ale got me excited, but the kölsch was very decent and I enjoyed the lightness and drinkability of the beers.

Boston Beer Works Kenmöre Kölsch. Boston, Massachusetts. (kölsch-style ale) – appears pale color with bare white head, smell delicate nose, floral and herbal, appealing blueberry and steel, I like the nose, mouthfeel slightly thick and cakey, taste decent, very soft, herbal touch is mostly acidic, which was surprising, bit heavier and foamier than I prefer, I like that finish of gasoline and slate.

Boston Beer Works Fenway American Pale Ale. Boston, Massachusetts. (american pale ale) – appears caramel red/brown, smell intense sappy hops, pine tree, mouthfeel fairly light, very spritzy with an acid bite, taste sweet but not syrupy, hops are roasted but no elements of blundering heaviness here, refreshing and light, a beer with flavor, ended up being surprisingly impressed by this beer, the nose suggested it would be overhopped (or at least hopped in a way I don't like), but I found it refreshing

Boston Beer Works Victory Red. Boston, Massachusetts. (american amber/red ale) – appears caramel red/brown, bit darker than Fenway, lots of lacing, smell cooler more herbal nose, more menthol, but alas nonetheless boring, mouthfeel full on attack of tiny spritz, then loose foam, taste boring leftover hops, feels tired, roast and hops, blah, typical airport red beer.

Boston Beer Works Buck Eye Oatmeal Stout. Boston, Massachusetts (oatmeal stout) appears dark black, off tan big head foam, smell bizarre nutty, edgy, coffee and chocolate without any sweetness, indeed oatmeal suggested, but only after I realized it was an oatmeal stout by looking at the label, mouthfeel loose, not much grip nor foam, taste one-dimensional roasted quality, nice but lacks complexity, light and drinkable, unlike my expectation, in the right environment, this might shine, but right now this struck me as a bit shallow if very drinkable.

I am trying to think how many hours I have killed at Logan Airport in my lifetime? I am guessing about 2000+ What is that--like 80 days? Yikes, I need a few beers to come to grips with that one...

Not unlike the "Bus Terminal Blues". 8)
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

I'd say so . . . the most tasteless ambers I've had have been consistently found in airports. Go figure.

It's good to hear that the stout is now fermented dry. I recall that originally (10yrs ago?) their stout was annoyingly sweet. The kolsch was always one of my faves.
