WTN: two with some spice

2006 Tegernseerhof Wachau Grüner Veltliner T26 (Wachau, Niederösterreich, Austria) screwcap closure, 12.5% - Klaus Wittauer selection, imported to USA by Select Wines, Chantilly, Virginia – appears greenish, smell vegetal and green, bit of stone, mouthfeel fizzy/spritzy, full flavored but easy flow, taste stony, lively fresh and sharp, nice rounding underneath, great acid, great flow, full flavor of peach pit and grapefruit rind, lively and very full of flavor, I enjoyed it quite a bit, corn on the cob was not the perfect food match, but I am not sure what would be, lovely wine for $15. I haven't had a lot of grüner veltliner, but what I like about those I've had is that liveliness and that spiciness -- wines with lots of personality. It would be interesting to taste further up the chain.

2006 Casara Roveri (Dal Maso) Colli Berici Sauvignon (Colli Berici DOC, Veneto, northeastern Italy) synthetic stopper, 13% - imported to USA by Michael R. Downey selections, Lorton, Virginia – appears ginger ale gold, spritz on glass, smell distinct nose, paint and cheese, rich depth, very cheesy, some gooseberry (maybe?), taste water upfront, then wonderful spice, spice then odd fruit, rich, tangy, spicy, lots of character here, leaves and green, bit rustic, very zippy, tons of flavor, fun to drink, for $13 I don't have a single complaint. This didn't work at all as an accompaniment to basic fish and chips (I think the fish and batter were far too sweet to go with this wine), but it was a lovely apertif and had lots of rough but full flavor that I really enjoyed. Northeastern Italy seems good hunting grounds for the types of sauvignon blanc I like to drink.
