WTN: 2005 Buehler Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

by Jason Hagen » Sat Sep 06, 2008 1:26 pm

This is a nice bargain in today's world.

2005 Buehler Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (8/31/2008)
The aromatics really evolved. At first there was lots of spice and I probably would not have picked it as cab. Over time it came into focus showing some green elements but at the same time, ripe focused fruit. The next night there were more leather and animal aromas. Tart fruit on the palate. Underlying vegetation and sweet light tannins. The tannins hardly showed on the finish. On the next day the wine was fuller, richer and the oak was more noticeable. One element I loved was the persistence of the finish. The wine went on an on with fruit, iron and rocks. (92 pts.)

Cheers,

Jason

We have enjoyed the offerings from Buehler many times over the years. In addition to the Cabs, they put out one of most palateable White Zins we've tried. Don't drink it ourselves, but get a bottle for Thanksgiving every year for our daughters.

Buehler's one of the those old Napa names that whenver you stumble across it, you go "Oh yeah, I forgot about them." Burgess is (or was, not sure if it's still around) another. And I get the two confused. Which is neither here nor there--this sounds like an honest, old timey cabernet of the type I like.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Too funny, in my mind Buehler and Burgess always go together (and yes Burgess is still around). I occasionally see old bottles of Burgess turn up and many don't know who they are. They can be had at a steal, although you never know about the storage.

This is the first "young" Buehler I have tasted in years but I would say it is in the more "old timey" style, although still very nice ripeness. And a good amount of oak but it works well in this style ... for me at least.

Carl, think I might try their chard from here for Wine Focus. $26 for regular entry wine. Russian River appellation?
