Old Eric-Ross Zin Vnyd???

by TomHill » Mon Sep 08, 2008 3:13 pm

Up NE of the town of Occidental, near MorelliLane, was the original property of Eric-Ross Wnry. They had some 100+ yr old Zin vines on the property and once made some stunning Zin from those grapes. Before that, it was SeaRidgeWnry and made some terrific Zins.
Eric-Ross now makes their wines in Sebastopol from purchased grapes and no longer owns the property. From FamilyWinemakers tasting, they're rather commercial in character I thought.
Anybody know who owns that old Zin vnyd and where the grapes go??

You could probably find out by contacting either of the partners in Eric Ross. When I visited the tasting room in Glen Ellen, they told me that they no longer have access to the the grapes from Occidental Vineyard (is that the vineyard you mean?) but not who is getting the grapes now.

Tried that, JC. When I was at FamilyWinemakers in Calif several weeks ago, I tasted thru their wines and asked one of them
where those grapes (what they called OccidentalVnyd) were going now and he didn't know.

Tom:

A friend and working buddy, Jim Caudill, told me it was in all likelihood either controlled by, or the property of Dutton, Tom....but he doesn't know.
He suggested you either contact Jim Goldfield (Dutton Goldfield), or go to the Sonoma V&G association webiste and ask there. Either one should know.

Solved...

by TomHill » Mon Sep 15, 2008 10:15 am

Got an e-mail from BradAlper(Ottomino) this weekend..mystery solved.
The mystery resulted from my memory of the drive up that way w/ AlRago some 6-8 yrs ago. He pointed out an old Zin vnyd there on HarrisonGrade Rd that somehow I surmised was the old Eric-Ross/SeaRidge Zin vnyd. In point of fact, according to Brad, the vonWeidlich vnyd was formerly known as OccidentalVnyd and the home of SeaRidge/EricRoss. As best I can tell, that old Zin vnyd on HarrisonGrade (thank you, Google) no longer exists.
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
