Bianco di Custoza

by Thomas » Wed Sep 10, 2008 1:04 pm

How many have had experience with this wine?

I've traveled to Verona numerous times, to attend VinItalia, and have been to Lake Garda, but last night, at home, was the first time I tasted Bianco di Custoza--didn't like it.

I read a little about it and find it is supposedly a dry wine with a soft, slightly bitter finish. The one I had was sweet and yucky.

Anyone know the real deal on this DOC?

Thanks, Bob.

I've already got the written information. Was wondering if anyone has had tactile experience with these wines, and I guess the answer is: not many people.

I'm not one to judge a category by one wine, and so I'll have to seek out a different producer and try again.

I'll try anything at least once and we had some of this when we were last in Italy. Ho hum. I agree with you.

It is such an oddball I was surprised to see it mentioned here!

I wouldn't dismiss a whole appellation without knowing whether the producer was any good. That said, I would rather drink Lugana or the best examples of Soave, in general.

Oliver,

I should have thought of you. Well, now you've validated my feeling on the situation. Lugana is of course among the great Italian whites.

We have stayed at Sirmione at the southern (Verona) end of Lake Garda which is in the Bianca de Custoza DOC over the past few years and had a few in that time. Also visited a vineyard and winery that made it. I've always found it a light crisp dry wine with sometimes a bit of bitterness, sometimes a bit of nuttiness. But always dry. It's enjoyable in the area, I wouldn't say that any I've had made claims to greatness, but its a decent food wine.

The winery I went to in 2006 (on a tourist trip) was a family run small winery called Cantina Molina - http://www.cantinaimolini.com - and you could buy three bottles of it for €10, so not at all expensive :) I did bring a mixed bag home with me but the one bottle of Bianca de Custoza when opened back home turned out to be oxidised. It was closed with a plastic stopper.

Of course, the Bianca de Custoza's we had in restaurants cost considerably more, but I don't know that they were any better than the Molina ones I drank at the winery.

We'll be back in Sirmione in a few weeks so if there's anything I can found out there for you, just ask.

Thanks, Peter.

I suppose the only thing I would like to know is where the wines you describe can be found in New York. As I posted, the one I tasted didn't resemble much the description I've read and that you have offered concerning the style of theses wines.
It appears they are the result of some serious blending: Trebbiano Toscano, Garganega, Tocai Friulano, Malvasia Toscana, Riesling Italico, and Cortese.

NOTE: I believe they refer to the DOC as Bianco di Custoza and not as Bianca de.
