WTN: Many Bordeaux

by Diane (Long Island) » Thu Sep 11, 2008 11:12 am

Yesterday, I had the tremendous pleasure of joining 8 other wine lovers at NYC's fabulous restaurant, 11 Madison Park. I am humbled by the extreme generosity of the attendees. I did not take notes, but certain traits of each wine have stuck in my mind.
Prior to the reds, we opened a 2000 Raveneau Butteaux - I last had this wine a little over four years ago, and it was shockingly bright and acidic and caused wows at the table. Last night, it had toned down and had become delicate and silky. My only disappointment was an abrupt finish. It had more on the nose than the palate, but still it was lovely.
Next was a flight of Ducru Beaucaillou - 1966 - talk about wows, this caused a universal one. The color was still ruby, it showed leather and tobacco with still some dark fruit lurking. I had low expectations for this one, but it was amazingly fresh. 1983 - nothing to write about as it paled in comparison and I couldn't put down the 1966. 1996 - I was anxious to sip this one as Covert Harris keeps taunting me (in a friendly way) with his lone bottle. Covert, if you are reading this, save it, as it still needs time. The 1966 overshadowded both of these bottles.
A visitor from LA brought a lone Cali Cab - 1996 Harlan- this is not a fruit bomb and, while we served it on its own, it could easily fit into a Bordeaux flight. In a word, gorgeous. I kept my glass of it for the duration of dinner, planning to drink it with my steak entree... and I would have, if it were not for the next flight. 1982 L'Evangile - great structure, ripeness, silkiness, and oh, so seductive. 1982 Leoville Barton -some acidity stuck out, but still thick, tannic, and structured, but it couldn't compete with L'Evangile. 1990 Cos D'Estournel - classic cigar box aromas, but a little austere. 1990 Lynch Bages- massive, a good dose of chocolate, dark fruit, leather - very classy, very delicious.
Onto some young 'uns - 1998 La Mission Haut Brion - lead pencil, raspberries, great mouthfeel, and great potential. 1999 Palmer - not as structured as La Mish, but lucious with dark fruit and minerals. Very nice. 2000 Conseillante - tremendous structure and tannins, black cherries, roasted meat, and needs lots of time.
We finished with a 1999 Rieussec - I've enjoyed this Sauternes before and the softness, without being cloyingly sweet, is what impresses me. It was the same last night, and a good way to end.

Wow, didn't you drink well!

I'm surprised (and impressed) that the Harlan showed so well in that company.

Great lineup.
I got a '66 Ducru for a friend's 40th 2 years ago. Not usually mentioned as one of top wines of vintage, but it drank beautifully.
I love the '82 L'Evangile. Great great wine.

Great lineup.

I have really enjoyed the 96 Ducru in the past, I think it has a huge upside but agree that it's not a wine to drink now unless you have a lot of it. The 82 L'Evangile is a rare treat I agree, but I liked the 82 Leoville Barton more than you seemed to. I absolutely love the 90 Cos, which outshined the 90 Lynch the night I had them both. The 99 Palmer used to be a fairly priced sleeper wine, but has been "discovered". Still a good wine, but pricey.

Sounds like a fantastic day of wine, and I'm confident that 11 Mad lived up to their part. Their service is perfect.

I can't even begin to describe the food, but their Black Angus steak with beef cheeks was beyond sublime. Wine service was outstanding.

I've been there many many times and couldn't agree with you more. It's my favorite place to have events like this. The food is amazing (try the pork entree sometime) and the service...well I already called it "perfect" so what else can I say? The wine service is equally perfect.

I recently met someone who used to be a captain there and we had a long talk about the place and I now have an even greater respect for what they do and how hard they work. A hallmark of Danny Meyer restaurants. 11 Mad is at the top level of restaurants in NYC.

That sounded like a GREAT night. Great set of wines. One of those a night would have been a good night for me.

It was my first Harlan, and I was as excited to try it as the other wines. The guy who brought it did not seem surprised that it showed so well. He just wanted us to enjoy it, which every single person did, and just another example of the evening's generosity.

I agree, and I have always said that about these wine dinners. Dinner with one of the bottles at the table would make me very happy....but then I would miss out on a dinner like this. I look at it as furthering my wine education :)

I have seven of the 1996's left. Had eight and drank one in error about four years ago. Way too young. I hope we don't need to wait another ten years before I bring one to Long Island. Actually, I'll take one down this Thanksgiving, when I visit my father, and have him hold it there to avoid travel shock for when we finally want to share it.

Love that restaurant. Lynn and I go there too often, probably, rather than experiment more.

My goodness, Covert, I didn't realize you have 7 of the 1996 Ducru's. I am supremely envious, and look forward to enjoying a bottle at the time of your choosing.
