MoCool Wines and Others

by Jim Grow » Sun Sep 14, 2008 4:08 pm

1999 Asara "Bell Tower" from Stellenbosch South Africa. Full of cherry fruit but also full of acidity. In any event, WAY too young or out of balance. A Bordeaux blend of 86% CS, 8% PV, 2% Malbec, 2% Merlot and 2% Cab. Franc. Not cheap either at $35.

2000 Quinault L'Enclos, wonderful deep dark fruit and fully open with 3 hrs, of decanting. Excellent and glad I have more. MoCool wine.

2000 Barde-Haut, another very nice Bordeaux if slightly less intense that the above but very impressive and given the same decanting time. MoCool wine.

2000 Clos L'Eglise, (Cotes d'Castillon) my last bottle of this and it was very smooth with all parts in balance but still less intense than the previous 2 wines but also much less expensive. For the price an excellent QPR.

2000 Virginie d' Valandraud, tasted at MoCool and not my bottle but was very impressed with the forward fruit and the minerality especially of this wine. Very EXCELLENT and need to try the Valandraud someday.

1975 Lafitte, also at MoCool and with a a very small taste but amazing with the complexity which reminded me of faded cherries and Iodine. Thanks a lot Howie!!!

Jean Laurent NV Brut Bl. d Noir , again at MoCool (back at the motel on Sat. nite) and a fine bubbly, do not remember the disgourgement date but very fine bead and lots of lasting froth. Consumed while watching Michel Phelps win his 8th gold metal with Luci, Jane and Linda L. Great way to end a great week-end. Sorry I only got to try one of your Pinot's Linda!!!

Wish I had taken notes or rememberd details of all that I tasted.

Jim,

I'm so glad you posted this; it reminded me that I have failed to write any notes about the MoCool wines. Taking the lazy way out, I suppose, thinking that surely SOMEONE would post detailed notes. (Ahem..John Fiola!). I'm especially pleased that you wrote about the 2000 Virginie d' Valandraud, which was one of the wines I brought. My impression was similar to yours of that one. Your Jean Laurent NV Brut Bl. d Noir was lovely, and I appreciate you sharing it with those of us who are happy to wander into any open door where wine is being poured!

It was a great weekend...let's do it again next year!!

I was glad to have met you Jim. It was indeed a great weekend. (Where are JF's notes?) I think we should do it again next year!
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
