WTN: Friulano, I guess no longer Tocai

by Dale Williams » Mon Sep 15, 2008 9:22 am

Betsy made a pair of dishes for dinner last night, a Marcella Hazan recipe of shrimp/artichokes/cheese, and a Jacques Pepin recipe for collards with hot sausage. Not the night to break out anything special, I opened the 2007 Bastianich Friulano (I guess they've now dropped the Tocai). Sweet pear fruit, a hint of almond nuttiness, seemingly just a teeny tiny touch offdry. Not very long. OK, I won't go for more, but would definitely have a glass if offered. B-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Dale,
Had the '06 version of this, labeled TocaiFriuliano, up at OsteriaMarco in Denver Fri night. Much as you describe, pleasant/easy-drinking white but nothing special as TocaiFriuliano goes.
Because the TocaiFriuliano wines of Friuli resemble soooo closely the Tokaji wines of Hungary, the EU commerce folks were convinced that people around the world were being decieved by those evil Friulians and buying TocaiFriuliano and hurting the market for Hungarian Tokaji, they forced them to drop the Tocai part of the name of their grape....apparently w/ the '07 vintage. Amazing the power of those EU bureaucrats...that they can actually change the name of a grape variety. What next...they'll whine & moan about Calif Champagne ?? :-)

Dale, I need to try more examples (only had 2 pure varietal Fruilianos, couple of others mixed),
but the ones I've tasted have not wowed me, and I'll be looking more at these as accent marks and not weighty tomes to add to the library. They make pleasant sippers, without much distinctiveness.
