MoCool Riesling Kabinett Vertical Tasting

by Tom N. » Wed Sep 17, 2008 10:00 pm

Since MoCool was Bordeaux this year, we decided to do a vertical of riesling. I have been buidling this vertical for a few years now. The tasters were:
Bob Noland
Bob Henrick (He kept saying, these are good rieslings, I've got to buy some of these)
Julia B
John Fiola
Howie Hart
myself
Later we were joined by James Roscoe and J C

PreMoCool tasting on Friday afternoon at the hotel on the picnic table just outside the pool. The vertical was known by all to be 2000 - 2005 (no 2004) riesling kabinetts. Our goal was to guess the years. These tasting notes are pretty sketchy because I am going totally on memory here. I only wrote down the years people guessed and their votes for favorite wines.

Two additional notes: We did taste these blind. Also, there was an interesting transition going with the corks/sealing system of these wines. The 2000 had a regular cork. 2001-2003 had artificial rubber/plastic corks. 2005 had a stelvin screwtop closure. I had been told that artificial corks cause faster aging because they let in more oxygen. All of these wines seemed to still be in good shape when we tasted them.

Riesling 1 Good straw color. Interesting light fruit nose and luscious midpalate. Medium finish

Riesling 2 Darkest color. Changeling nose, nice smooth midpalate and medium to long finish.

Riesling 3 Good Straw color again. Most interesting and ocmplex nose of all the rieslings with some petrol and lots of ripe melon. Rich midpalate with lots of fruit. Long finish

Riesling 4 Lightest color of all. Somewhat shy nose but good midpalate and medium finish.

Riesling 5. Goldish straw color. A rich and expressive nose that was almost as good as #3. Rich midpalate again with ripe fruit, especially peaches and melons. Medium to long finish that was delightful.

Of all the wine geeks there, some got no years correct and most of us only got one year right.

Favorite rieslings: #1 John Fiola and James N., #2 Bob H. #3 Bob N., Tom N. (tied with #5) and James N (his second choice) #4 Julia B. and #5 Tom N (tied with #3) and Bob N. (his second choice). Somehow I missed Howie's vote for best of the vertical.

Wines revealed: All were Gunderloch riesling kabinett 'Jean Baptiste'

#1 2001 second favorite at the tasting
#2 2000
#3 2003 favorite of most at the tasting.
#4 2002
#5 2005

That's because you told one of your brothers to write it down. I'm pretty sure the 2003 was my favorite also.

Thanks Howie,

I always like it when I can blame one of my brothers. I think you are right, your vote was for the 2003 also.

I went through the vertical later. I thought they were all Fabu! That being said, by the time I got there, I think #4 was really coming out of its shell and #1 was shining like a star. I would be hard pressed to remember which was my favorite, but I will drink with the Noland Brothers any time!

David,

I just added the note about the interesting transition in wine closures that Gunderloch went through during this time period. What was your opinion of the artificial corks that Gunderloch was using for a few years? Did you ever get any oxidized wines because of the artificial corks?

Yes I did. Every producer where I have tried to hold bottles with artificial corks have given me oxidized bottles.

Hi Bob,

I did not write any notes on riesling tasting #2 because I only had 2 scraps of paper and no room to write left. Sorry.
