Oh yes! I did read Oswaldo's note, but I had forgotten. Of course we'll have that in - I just reordered today.

Reference Cono Sur Pinot Noir

by JC (NC) » Tue Sep 23, 2008 5:19 pm

Jenise, a warning: I tried a glass in a restaurant (I think the 2006 vintage) and found it quite overpowering for my entree of chicken piccata. It is a Pinot Noir that comes on boldly and I don't find it very Burgundian at all. I do like it on its own but think it would match better to rabbit, beef bourgignon or boar meat than a delicate chicken dish.

I've been in a "reduce the cellar" mode for a couple of months, so I haven't really had any flaming bargains lately. Although the 2006 ESJ Gamay @$13 is pretty nice. But, then again, Steve's wines always are value priced IMO.

We picked up an '07 at Whole Paycheck in Portland, ME for $9.99. We agree with JC that is more Bold than Burgundian, but it went very nicely with a dish that true love concocted tonight. It was a pork dish consisting of pounded pieces of loin sauteed with wild mushrooms, and served with cous cous, and green beens. It all went together very nicely.

Ummm, OK, does this count ? We opened an '85 Caymus Estate CS, priced $15.99. Of course, we bought a case of it twenty years ago at The Wine House, but it felt like a steal then and feels the same way today. It still tastes great too.

Cono Sur's reserve Sauv Blanc at $12.50 very much deserves your attention.

Torres, Vina Brava, Rose, Catalunya 2006 for $5. Delightful and very satisfying Garnacha-based rose. Love it!

I hope you like this better than I did. The bottle I had didn't encourage me to go buy more. In fact, all the 2006 Burgundy I've had in the price range has been thin and lifeless.

JC, it was a store close out. There wasn't a whole lot there (we grabbed 4x Cab, 4 x Champagne). I told the couple we do wine dinners with and they cleaned out the rest.

On the personal side, it would have to be the 2001 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi I got for $4.99 a couple weeks ago at Grocery Outlet. And that's no lie! A mismark for sure. Only one of those, alas.
